Shi Sui, a modern woman who died after choking on a steamed bun upon discovering her family's hidden wealth, transmigrates into a melodramatic novel as its female lead. Determined to live a lazy, comfortable life after her previous struggles, she chooses to marry the story's second male lead, Wen Nian, rather than the abusive male lead, Mu He. On her wedding day, Mu He attempts to kidnap her, but Shi Sui remains calm, protected by the novel's protagonist halo, and ultimately rejects him. She had previously rescued a mysterious youth in white, Wen Nian, who reveals himself to be the Crown Prince. Instead of following the original plot, Shi Sui chooses Wen Nian, leading to an unconventional wedding where he wears white and mocks traditional rituals.
Wen Nian is known as a madman, eccentric and dangerous, with a frail constitution and a desire for early death. Despite his terrifying reputation, he is intrigued by Shi Sui's lack of fear and her candid behavior. Their relationship develops through strange interactions, including shared meals where Wen Nian, a vegetarian, watches her eat with amusement. He gifts her a chest of priceless jade pendants after she accidentally gives him a fake one, showing his possessive yet playful nature. Shi Sui navigates court politics and Wen Nian's unpredictable temperament, often using humor and honesty to defuse tension. She also encounters Li Yue, a consort from a powerful family who attempts to undermine her but is swiftly dealt with by Wen Nian's ruthless protection.
The core conflict arises from Shi Sui's knowledge of the original plot, which predicts a tragic ending where Mu He misunderstands and torments her. She strives to alter this fate by maintaining her alliance with Wen Nian while keeping her distance from Mu He. However, Mu He returns to the capital, becoming a retainer at a general's residence, and remains a lingering threat. Wen Nian's suspicion of Mu He's intentions towards Shi Sui creates tension, but he chooses to investigate rather than act impulsively. Shi Sui's goal is to survive and enjoy her new life, but she must also manage Wen Nian's health and emotional state, as his nihilistic tendencies pose a risk to their future together.
As the story progresses, Shi Sui and Wen Nian's bond deepens through mutual understanding and shared quirks. She accepts his eccentricities, and he appreciates her authenticity and lack of pretense. The narrative explores their growing affection amidst political intrigue and personal demons. Wen Nian's guard, Yuan Youdao, remains skeptical of Shi Sui but gradually accepts her influence on his master. The story sets the stage for further challenges as Shi Sui works to dismantle the original plot's tragic elements, relying on her modern perspective and wit to navigate the dangerous world of imperial politics and romantic entanglements.
