Shi Sui, a modern woman who died after choking on a steamed bun upon discovering her family's hidden wealth, transmigrates into a melodramatic novel as its female lead. Determined to live a lazy, comfortable life after her previous struggles, she chooses to marry the story's second male lead, Wen Nian, rather than the abusive male lead, Mu He. On her wedding day, Mu He attempts to kidnap her, but Shi Sui remains calm, protected by the novel's protagonist halo, and ultimately rejects him. Shi Sui navigates court politics and Wen Nian's unpredictable temperament, often using humor and honesty to defuse tension. She also encounters Li Yue, a consort from a powerful family who attempts to undermine her but is swiftly dealt with by Wen Nian's ruthless protection.

The core conflict arises from Shi Sui's knowledge of the original plot, which predicts a tragic ending where Mu He misunderstands and torments her.
