Yun Mi is a three-hundred-year-old ginseng spirit who has cultivated human form and resides at Qingyun Temple under the care of an old Taoist priest. She regards a woman who once visited the temple as her mother and learns that her mother's younger brother is in mortal danger. Acting on this vision, she descends the mountain to save him, instructed to do good deeds and accumulate merit. After five days of wandering and hunger, she encounters a police team led by Captain Zheng Qingyun, who are investigating a human trafficking ring in Fu Family Village. Yun Mi senses a death aura surrounding the officers and follows them to prevent their demise. She warns them away from a hut where traffickers have planted explosives, saving the team from a fatal trap. The police mistakenly believe Yun Mi is a rescued child and take her to their station.
At the station, Yun Mi reveals she is a ginseng spirit and guides the officers to a body buried on a nearby hill. The police discover the corpse of Lin Le'an, a boy killed by the traffickers a day prior. Yun Mi uses her spiritual abilities to allow the grieving parents to see their son's spirit one last time before sending him to the underworld, earning significant merit in the process. She also provides the location of the traffickers' hideout, leading to their arrest and the dismantling of the village's involvement in human trafficking. With no family records found, the police determine Yun Mi is an orphan and arrange for her temporary care.
While at the station, Yun Mi encounters Captain Lu Yanchao, a stoic investigator working on a separate serial murder case. She immediately clings to him, declaring he is her uncle, despite his protests. Lu Yanchao is initially resistant but is swayed by her persistent crying and his colleagues' suggestions. He reluctantly agrees to let her stay at his apartment for the night. During this time, Yun Mi demonstrates her supernatural perception by predicting that an old man Lu Yanchao passes while driving will fall into the water. Lu Yanchao saves the man, confirming her accuracy and beginning to accept her strange abilities.
The narrative shifts to Lu Yanchao's ongoing investigation into a serial killer who has murdered six people, removing specific body parts from each victim. The case hits a deadlock until Yun Mi examines the crime scene photos and claims the body parts can be assembled. Forensic analysis reveals that tissue samples from the latest crime scene match the DNA of previous victims, suggesting the killer may be using stitched-together body parts. Yun Mi identifies the next victim as a man named Liao Ming and warns Lu Yanchao not to go to Happy Neighborhood alone. Lu Yanchao takes her warning seriously and sets up a surveillance operation at Liao Ming's residence.
That night, the team observes a figure with a distinctive, uneven gait approaching the building. The suspect moves with unnatural agility, climbing drainpipes and evading capture. Lu Yanchao coordinates with his team to breach Liao Ming's apartment and apprehend the intruder. The chapter concludes with the police storming the residence as the suspect attempts to reach his target, leaving the outcome of the confrontation unresolved.
