Lin Mo is a recent university graduate with a degree in visual design and a gold-award-winning graduation project inspired by Northern Chinese folk culture. Despite her academic excellence and artistic talent, she faces relentless rejection in the job market, where connections and family resources outweigh merit. Her parents, both elementary school teachers, urge her to return home and prepare for the stable but unfulfilling path of a teacher certification exam. Feeling trapped and creatively stifled by the brutal economic reality, Lin Mo makes an impulsive decision to escape. Using her life savings of forty thousand yuan, she purchases a one-way ticket to Chengdu, hoping to find inspiration and clarity in a place she saw in a viral video of the sacred Genie Mountain region.
At the airport, Lin Mo sketches quietly in a corner, unaware that she catches the attention of Danzeng Luobu, a handsome and successful Tibetan entrepreneur. Danzeng, who owns a chain of high-end boutique guesthouses across Sichuan, is struck by her quiet elegance and purity. However, he misses the chance to speak with her as she is swept away by the crowd. On the flight to Chengdu, Lin Mo befriends Cizhen Lamu, a vibrant and outgoing Tibetan girl from Kangding. Their instant connection leads Lin Mo to alter her plans; instead of sightseeing in Chengdu, she accepts an offer to travel with Cizhen and her uncle to Kangding, and eventually toward Genie.
In Chengdu, Lin Mo gets lost and stumbles upon Wujie, a sophisticated jazz bar owned by Cizhen’s brother, Danzeng. She reunites with Cizhen, who introduces her to the bar’s atmosphere. Unbeknownst to Lin Mo, Danzeng is working behind the bar and spots her silhouette, recognizing her as the girl from the airport. The near-miss deepens his intrigue. The group travels to Kangding, where Lin Mo and Cizhen share a heartfelt friendship over yak hotpot before parting ways. Lin Mo continues her journey alone to Litang, battling severe altitude sickness, before hiring a shared vehicle to reach the remote Zeba Village near Genie Mountain.
Upon arriving in Zeba Village, Lin Mo checks into a modest local guesthouse run by a family named Jiayang. Eager to explore, she attempts to hike to the Genie Glacier despite suffering from altitude sickness. Near a landmark known as the Lonely Tree, she collapses from severe hypoxia. Danzeng, who happens to be riding his horse Dorje in the area, discovers her unconscious body. He immediately administers first aid, carries her to his nearby luxury guesthouse, Wild Haven Genie, and ensures she receives proper medical attention and oxygen therapy.
Lin Mo wakes up in Danzeng’s guesthouse, grateful but embarrassed by the trouble she caused. She attempts to pay for her stay, shocked by the two-thousand-yuan nightly rate, and tries to leave before fully recovering. Danzeng stops her, insisting she stay until her condition stabilizes. Recognizing her artistic skills and the guesthouse’s need for online promotion in such a remote location, Danzeng offers her a volunteer position. He proposes that she document the scenery and the guesthouse in exchange for free accommodation and meals. Lin Mo, needing a place to stay and a source of inspiration, accepts the offer. The story concludes with Lin Mo settling into the staff quarters, beginning a new chapter of her life in the mountains, while Danzeng watches over her with growing affection, setting the stage for a romance forged in the high altitude.
