The Great Beauty of Hong Kong in the 1980s

Lin Keying, an ordinary office worker who died suddenly after ten years of hard labor, transmigrates into the body of a tragic female supporting character in a period novel set in 1980s Hong Kong. The original Lin Keying was an orphan adopted by a wealthy merchant family, betrothed as a child bride to their eldest grandson, Chen Songxian. After the family fled to Hong Kong during political turmoil, Lin Keying was left behind on the mainland. Decades later, she traveled to Hong Kong to find her relatives but was rejected by Songxian, who despised the feudal arrangement, and returned to the mainland to endure a miserable life entangled in melodramatic love affairs. Determined to avoid this fate, Lin Keying decides to seek the one million Hong Kong dollar compensation Songxian originally offered to break off the engagement, planning to return to the mainland wealthy and free.

Upon arriving in Hong Kong, Lin Keying is picked up by Ah Hui, a bodyguard for the Chen family, and taken not to Songxian’s residence but to the Mid-Levels villa of Cheng Wanting, the powerful and cold eldest young master of the rival Cheng shipping family. Their interactions grow more frequent, including a scene where Lin Keying tends to blood on his suit after a gang-related shooting, an incident that reveals the dangerous underworld connections underlying Hong Kong’s wealthy elite.

As Lin Keying transforms her appearance with new clothes bought at Cheng Wanting’s expense, the dynamic between them shifts. Cheng Wanting, who has always been indifferent to romantic advances, finds himself increasingly preoccupied with Lin Keying’s presence in his private villa. He begins to question his initial dismissal of her, while Lin Keying remains focused on her financial goals, unaware that her actions are unraveling the original novel’s tragic trajectory.
