Shi Xiaojiu, a five-year-old girl, serves as the village chief of Taoyuan Village, a role she inherited after the previous chief appeared in elders' dreams to designate her as a divine child who would bring fortune to the village. In reality, Xiaojiu is a reincarnated zombie king from a post-apocalyptic world who retains her immense physical strength and mental powers despite her childlike appearance. She lives a peaceful life with the villagers, who treat her with kindness and care, unaware of her true origins. Her existence is governed by a mysterious System that assigns her tasks to help her become a qualified village chief, rewarding her with points that can be exchanged for items from a modern store.
The story begins with a conflict between Taoyuan Village and neighboring Xiàhé Village over water rights during a severe drought. Xiàhé villagers attempt to steal water from Taoyuan's wells, leading to a confrontation. Xiaojiu intervenes, effortlessly defeating the grown men of Xiàhé Village with a stick, establishing her supernatural strength and earning the villagers' awe and protection. Following this, the System tasks her with ensuring the villagers have enough food. She learns to plant sweet potatoes and predicts rain, which comes true, boosting her status as a divine figure. Her rewards include a talking wild chicken named Cuihua and a cookbook, which she uses to improve the villagers' diet with delicious wild boar meat.
Xiaojiu's adventures lead her to discover more about her role and the world around her. She rescues an elderly man, Old Xu, from a hunting trap in the mountains, receiving anti-inflammatory medicine and points as rewards. Old Xu, intrigued by Xiaojiu's resemblance to someone from his past, decides to stay in the village and offers to teach her to read. Simultaneously, Xiaojiu encounters a masked martial arts expert, Yan Jue, who is poisoned and fleeing from attackers. She saves his life with a detoxification pill from the System, and he agrees to stay in the village to teach martial arts to the children in exchange for her help.
With both a scholar and a martial artist now in the village, Xiaojiu envisions establishing a school to educate the children of Taoyuan Village. She organizes a business venture, selling handmade backpacks and modern candies in the nearby town to raise funds for the schoolhouse. The venture is successful, generating significant income that allows her to pay the villagers and plan for the future. During a trip to town, she learns that Wang Zhengyi, a local boy, refuses to attend school due to bullying by wealthy students, prompting Xiaojiu to investigate and address the issue.
As the story progresses, Xiaojiu continues to balance her duties as village chief with her personal growth. She practices martial arts techniques learned from Yan Jue, though her attempts are comically uncoordinated. The villagers grow increasingly dependent on her for protection and prosperity, while Xiaojiu uses her System rewards to improve their quality of life. The narrative sets the stage for further developments in Taoyuan Village, with Xiaojiu aiming to build a school and ensure the village's long-term survival and prosperity through education and self-sufficiency.
