The Farmer’s Wife has a Magical Spiritual Spring

Su Zhi, a modern woman who died after a bitter divorce, awakens in the body of Zhao Xiaomei, a sickly farmer's wife in ancient China. The original owner was married to Shen Zi'an, a kind but poor young man, and was banished to a dilapidated storage shed due to a severe, itchy skin condition that the family believes is contagious. Su Zhi accepts her new reality and resolves to survive. She discovers that her husband, despite being pressured by his family to divorce her, remains devoted and caring, bringing her food and heating water for her baths daily. This contrasts sharply with the hostility of the rest of the Shen family, particularly the third daughter-in-law, Sun Shi, who is greedy, loud, and constantly schemes to take resources meant for Su Zhi and Shen Zi'an.

The central conflict arises from the Shen family's resentment toward the cost of Su Zhi's medical treatment and their desire to divert all family resources to their favored children, specifically the fifth son and the youngest daughter, Shen Zhu. Sun Shi and her husband, Shen Ziping, frequently steal food meant for the couple and create domestic turmoil. As Su Zhi uses the spiritual water to grow healthy vegetables, she and Shen Zi'an begin to improve their living conditions subtly. Their relationship deepens as they share quiet moments and mutual support. Shen Zi'an reveals that Shen Zhang Shi, the matriarch, is not his birth mother but his father's second wife, explaining the complex family dynamics and the favoritism shown to the younger siblings. Su Zhi learns that Shen Zi'an is actually quite capable and wealthy in secret, having saved money from his labor, which he uses to care for his wife away from the prying eyes of his family.

The story progresses with Su Zhi navigating the treacherous household politics. She forms a tentative alliance with the second sister-in-law, Li Shi, who is kind and sympathetic. However, the antagonists, Sun Shi and Shen Zhu, continue to plot against her. Shen Zhu, spoiled and manipulative, tries to exploit Shen Zi'an's kindness for personal gain, such as demanding bathing tubs and extra eggs. Shen Zi'an outmaneuvers these requests, shifting the burden back to the schemers. The family's greed becomes more apparent as they realize Shen Zi'an is no longer contributing all his earnings to the family pot, leading to increased tension and covert plots by Sun Shi and Shen Ziping to undermine the couple.

Despite the hardships, Su Zhi finds hope in her spiritual spring and her husband's unwavering loyalty. She plans to use her knowledge and the magical water to build a better life, focusing on healing and self-sufficiency. The narrative sets the stage for Su Zhi to gradually overcome her illness and the family's oppression, using her unique advantage to secure a stable and happy future with Shen Zi'an, while the Shen family's internal conflicts threaten to escalate further.
