The Farmer's Substitute Bride: The Manor Lady's Rise to Power

Liu Mumu, a recent college graduate from a rural village, returns home for summer vacation to find her family in crisis. Her father, Liu Shengyuan, is critically ill and requires expensive surgery, while her brother, Liu Jinbao, struggles as a low-paid laborer. Wealthy relatives, the Liu Zaishi couple, visit and propose a marriage arrangement. They offer to cover the medical bills and provide financial support for the family in exchange for Mumu marrying Zheng Mo, the heir to a prosperous regional vineyard empire. Although Mumu initially resists, desperate for her father’s survival, she agrees to the union arranged by her parents and the matchmakers.

Three days after the agreement, Mumu arrives at the Zheng estate in a wedding dress, only to discover the groom is a chained, mentally unstable man kept in a secluded backyard cottage. The wedding ceremony is bizarre, with a rooster standing in for the groom. She learns that Zheng Mo has been catatonic and violent for months, having lost his mind after a romantic betrayal. Mumu is locked in the cottage with him, terrified and confused. Mumu, possessing nursing knowledge, treats Zheng Mo’s wounds and calms him with sedatives. She realizes the legal and social implications of the crime scene and decides to stay to uncover the truth, partly to repay the three million yuan the Zheng family paid for her father’s surgery. She confronts Zheng Chao, who mocks her but allows her to remain, likely to maintain an appearance of familial care. Mumu begins to care for Zheng Mo, gradually earning the trust of the household staff, particularly a maid named Xiao Xie. She also learns from Zheng Mo’s university classmate, Qiu Lingyun, that her husband was once a top student undergoing elite special forces training, suggesting his condition may be feigned or chemically induced rather than purely psychological.

While investigating the vineyard, Mumu discovers workers secretly transporting crates into a thicket rather than to the processing factory. When she follows them, she and Zheng Mo are attacked. During the escape, they fall down a hillside and end up in a border quarantine zone where a viral outbreak is being managed by international medical teams. Mumu assists the doctors due to her medical background. During this time, Zheng Mo contracts the virus but recovers. The medical team speculates that the viral infection may have counteracted a long-term poisoning that was causing Zheng Mo’s mental deterioration. Zheng Mo reveals he can speak clearly and confirms he was poisoned, regaining his cognitive faculties.

After two months in the quarantine zone, Mumu and a recovered Zheng Mo return to the estate via helicopter. They find the original manor has been demolished and replaced by a modern villa, indicating Zheng Chao’s rapid consolidation of power. Zheng Mo, now physically and mentally restored, walks beside Mumu as they approach the new property, ready to confront the cousin who stole his inheritance and murdered their parents. The story concludes with the couple united against the corrupt relative, shifting from a forced marriage of convenience to a partnership driven by justice and mutual survival.
