Shen Yuanzhu is the only legitimate daughter of the wealthy Shen family, a prominent textile and dyeing merchant house in Suzhou. Her mother, before dying, secured Yuanzhu’s future by establishing the Jiecui Workshop as her private dowry, hiding it from her half-brother Shen Yanhuai and sister-in-law Ye Yunyi, who have been systematically draining the family’s assets. Yuanzhu is engaged to Xie Xuchuan, the eldest grandson of the rival Xie family, in a union that combines the Xie weaving manual with the Shen dyeing manual to create the famous Cloud Brocade. The marriage is meant to solidify a business alliance that has made both families powerful in the region. Yuanzhu appears gentle and naive, but she is actually shrewd and financially astute, having learned to protect her mother’s legacy through careful management and concealment.

The central conflict erupts when Xie Xuchuan returns from a business trip to Huizhou with a devastating request.
