Aelin is married off to a demon prince, Draegon, for a truce between demons and humans, even though both species have hated each other for centuries, and killed the other mercilessly. So, both sides chose the least favored child for the marriage and bound them in a relationship.
Being in a place surrounded by demons was like a nightmare to Aelin which causes her a lot of distress, especially when her husband leaves her shortly after they spend a night together to go fight a war with unknown beings which leaves Aelin at the mercy of her enemies
