Tang Xiaorou, a modern medical researcher, awakens in the body of a village girl in 1970s China after a head injury. The original Tang Xiaorou was a timid daughter in a patriarchal family that favored sons. Her father, Tang Jianshe, and grandmother planned to sell her to a nearly forty-year-old bachelor, Yang Erzhu, for a 200 yuan bride price to fund her cousin Tang Xiangdong’s marriage. Her mother, Qin Xueqiong, had secretly stolen the household registration book to arrange a blind date for her daughter, hoping to save her from this fate.

On the way to the blind date, Tang Xiaorou mistakes Shen Huaixu, a handsome soldier with a commanding presence, for her intended match. Shen Huaixu, who needs a wife to care for his two adopted children, Cui Liang and Cui Yan, before he departs on a secret mission, proposes a marriage of convenience. He offers 2,000 yuan upfront and 80 yuan monthly in exchange for her care of the children, with no other marital obligations. Tang Xiaorou agrees, seeing it as a perfect escape from her family’s plans. They register for marriage immediately, shocking the matchmaker and the actual blind date candidate who arrives late.

Tang Xiaorou brings Shen Huaixu home to confront her family. She discovers her mother tied up and beaten in a utility room. When Yang Erzhu arrives to claim his bride, Tang Xiaorou violently defends her marriage, using her medical knowledge to strike pressure points and incapacitate her father and grandmother. She declares her intent to divorce her mother from Tang Jianshe and take her mother with her to the army. Shen Huaixu supports this, promising to take Qin Xueqiong in as well.

Shen Huaixu departs for his mission, leaving Tang Xiaorou with the two children. She learns that the children were abused by their biological mother before their father, a martyr, died. Tang Xiaorou treats their injuries and begins to bond with them, earning their trust. She also discovers a valuable mutton-fat jade pendant that belonged to her mother, which the grandmother had kept. Using a sickle to threaten the grandmother, Tang Xiaorou forces the return of the pendant.

While gathering herbs on the mountain, Tang Xiaorou eavesdrops on her grandfather, Old Man Tang, and Widow Xia. She discovers that Tang Jianhua, the eldest son, is actually Widow Xia’s son, not her grandmother’s, and that the grandmother and grandfather may have switched babies. This revelation gives Tang Xiaorou significant leverage over the family. She uses this information, along with her newfound assertiveness and the support of her husband’s comrade, to continue dismantling the Tang family’s control over her and her mother. The story follows her efforts to establish independence, care for the children, and navigate the complexities of military life and family secrets in 1970s China.
