Wen Xin is a twenty-one-year-old woman from the modern era who possesses a unique lottery system capable of extracting pure water and essential oils from plants. After a bitter falling out with her former best friend Song Qian, who wrote a malicious novel depicting Wen Xin as a tragic figure, Wen Xin reads the book and is suddenly transported into its world. She arrives in 1979, having transmigrated into the body of the novel's supporting female character, who shares her name. The original character was forced by her family to attempt suicide and was subsequently rescued by Yan Zeyang, a cold and stern military commander. Upon waking, Wen Xin instinctively kisses Yan Zeyang, mistaking him for a dream, but he angrily shoves her away and leaves. She is then found by Luo Juan, the mother of the original character, who reveals that the family plans to send Wen Xin to the Yan household as a nanny to seduce Yan Zeyang's son and secure the family's political safety.
Wen Xin realizes she has entered a fictional world where the female lead is Song Qian, the same name as her betrayer. Determined to alter her fate and avoid the tragic ending prescribed by the novel, she decides to deviate from the original plot. She is taken to the Yan family compound, where she meets He Wenyan, the second wife of Yan Zeyang's father, and Yan Zeyang himself. Unlike the original story where Yan Zeyang brutally rejects the Wen family, he merely ignores them, allowing Wen Xin to secure the position of nanny. She moves into the Yan household, where she must navigate complex family dynamics, including the tension between Yan Zeyang and his father, Yan Weiguo, over past political grievances and the death of Yan Zeyang's mother.
As the new nanny, Wen Xin uses her modern cooking skills and her system's ability to extract high-quality ingredients to prepare meals that impress the household. She forms a gentle bond with Yan Miaomiao, the six-year-old daughter from Yan Weiguo's first marriage, which contrasts with Yan Zeyang's cold demeanor toward the child. Yan Zeyang remains hostile and suspicious of Wen Xin, viewing her presence with disdain and referring to her as a stray. Despite his coldness, Wen Xin notices that he drinks water she prepared and eats the snacks she makes, suggesting a subtle shift in his attitude. The core conflict arises from the historical enmity between the Wen and Yan families, with Yan Zeyang harboring deep resentment toward the Wen family for their role in his mother's downfall.
Wen Xin faces the challenge of maintaining her identity while living in a restrictive era where travel permits and identification are essential for survival. She lacks the proper documentation to leave the compound freely, forcing her to stay and work within the Yan household. As she integrates into the family, she observes the political undercurrents affecting Yan Weiguo's career and Yan Zeyang's military standing. The story follows Wen Xin's efforts to survive and thrive in this unfamiliar time, using her knowledge of the plot and her system's advantages to navigate the dangerous politics of the Yan family. Her actions begin to diverge significantly from the novel's original trajectory, potentially altering the fates of all characters involved, including the relationship between Yan Zeyang and the original female lead, Song Qian, who has not yet entered the story.
