Zhong Qing awakens from a nightmare in which she is the vicious supporting female character in a novel, destined to be drugged, sold by her stepmother Lin Huijuan and father Zhong Zhihong, and ultimately die in a remote mountain village. In the dream, her half-sister Zhong Yuening inherits the family wealth and marries into privilege, while her husband Pei Yanshen spends years searching for her before moving on with the story's heroine. Realizing she is living through the plot, Zhong Qing immediately switches the drugged teacup with her abusers' cups, takes their valuables, and discovers she can enter a magical storage space through her mother's jade bracelet. She loots the entire Zhong family fortune, including gold bars, jewelry, medicines, and valuable goods, then leaves the unconscious trio to be captured by the very traffickers who had arranged her sale. She sends anonymous letters to the police and newspapers exposing their crimes before boarding a train back to the Northwest.

On the train, Zhong Qing encounters Ye Guxue, a woman who later becomes an ally. She prevents a theft attempt by a suspicious man, an incident that echoes a future disaster she remembers from the novel's plot. Upon returning to the airport residential compound where she lives with Pei Yanshen and their two children, Pei Leyu and Pei Le'an, she finds the family in turmoil. Pei Yanshen, believing she has abandoned them, is cold and dismissive, having already drafted a divorce agreement. His parents, however, are warm and welcoming, noticing Zhong Qing's changed demeanor and gentle treatment of the children.

Zhong Qing's primary focus becomes rebuilding her relationship with her children, particularly Pei Leyu, who suffers from selective mutism and trauma due to neglect. She patiently earns her daughter's trust through small gestures, such as sharing chocolate and shopping for clothes together. During a trip to the supply cooperative, she confronts Zhao Yajing, a clerk who insults her, and later faces a false accusation from neighbor Mrs. Zhao that she is selling her children. The misunderstanding escalates when Pei Le'an runs to find his father, spreading panic through the compound. Police and neighbors surround Zhong Qing, but Ye Guxue and her sister, the compound's women's director Ye Fang, arrive to vouch for her character. The truth emerges when new clothes for the entire family are discovered among Zhong Qing's purchases, disproving the accusation.

Despite being cleared, Zhong Qing's relationship with Pei Yanshen remains strained. He continues to view her actions as manipulative attempts to prevent divorce, while she maintains emotional distance, focusing solely on her children's wellbeing. She begins planting vegetables in their courtyard, using spring water from her magical space to nurture the crops. Meanwhile, Pei Yanshen learns through a colleague that Zhong Qing may have saved Ye Guxue's life on the train, adding to his growing confusion about her true intentions. The story follows Zhong Qing's efforts to heal her fractured family while navigating the complexities of her new reality, as Pei Yanshen gradually questions his assumptions about her character.
