Set in August 1975, the story follows three-year-old He Luoyao, known as Luoluo, who lives in a declining Western-style mansion in South City. Her father, He Guangyuan, died three years prior, and her mother, Sheng Manzhu, has remained a widow since. The He family is facing political persecution and imminent exile to the countryside. During a heated argument between her mother and the patriarch, Old Master He, Sheng Manzhu refuses to take Luoluo with her when she remarries into the Lin family, viewing the child as a burden and a jinx due to the circumstances of her birth. The He family elders agree, forcing Sheng Manzhu to leave the toddler behind. Abandoned in the empty house, a starving Luoluo falls and injures herself while trying to find food. She encounters a small turtle that can speak, and in a moment of desperation and hunger, she shares her last bite of pancake with it, forming an unlikely friendship.
While exploring her mother’s empty room, Luoluo discovers a glowing pearl hidden under the bed. Upon touching it, she is transported to a mystical space containing a wooden house, a pond with talking koi fish, and fertile land. The turtle reveals that the pearl is now part of Luoluo’s consciousness, granting her control over this dimension. The space provides healing water that mends her wounds and food that appears magically. Realizing the danger of her secret, the turtle warns Luoluo to keep the space hidden. That night, Luoluo and the turtle sneak into a truck where Old Master He and his sons are secretly transporting the family’s hidden treasures to a safe location. While half-asleep, Luoluo instinctively uses her power to transfer all the crates of gold, jewelry, and cash into her space. The He men discover the empty truck and are devastated, believing their future restoration of power has been stolen.
Luoluo wakes up in the space and, unaware of the magnitude of what she has taken, focuses only on the chest of money and ration coupons she recognizes as valuable for buying food. She leaves the space and finds herself in an unfamiliar rural area. Exhausted and hungry, she encounters a tall, fierce-looking man named Xiao Lu, who is returning from town with an ox cart. Despite his gruff demeanor, the ox refuses to leave until it nudges Luoluo affectionately. Luoluo, mistaking Xiao Lu for her father due to his handsome appearance, cries out for him. Surrounded by curious villagers, Xiao Lu is forced to take responsibility for the child to avoid being accused of kidnapping. He brings her to his modest home in Guhe Village.
At the Xiao household, Xiao Lu’s mother, Lu Suzhen, initially suspects her son of wrongdoing but quickly warms to Luoluo. She declares that the child is fated to be part of their family and renames her Xiao Luoyao. The family includes Xiao Lu, his bedridden eldest brother Xiao Shan, a former deputy battalion commander paralyzed from the waist down, and his younger brother Xiao He. Luoluo befriends Xiao Shan, bringing him the magical healing water from her space. The water provides a sensation of warmth and potential recovery for his legs, offering a glimmer of hope to the despairing young man. As Luoluo settles into her new life with the Xiao family, she navigates her dual existence between a humble rural home and a vast, treasure-filled mystical space, setting the stage for her growth and the eventual impact of her hidden wealth on her new family’s destiny.
