Summary

She gave it to her cousin as a token of affection, not understanding that he was using her. When Ye Ningxin takes it back and returns it to Gu Haoyuan, it's not just about property. It's her first act of reclaiming something meaningful. She's literally returning what was stolen, but metaphorically she's returning trust to the person who deserved it. The pendant going from a tool of manipulation to a gesture of reconciliation is beautiful. Then there's the food. Eight eggs and coarse rice becoming something that nourishes two starving people. The original host would have sold those eggs for cash and brought nothing back. Ye Ningxin cooks them and feeds the blind Prince first. Food in this story isn't just sustenance—it's care. But then it cuts to Ye Ningxin's body aching, her fingers plump as pig's trotters, and suddenly you're grounded in this gritty reality. That contrast is brilliant. The most vivid scene for me was the kitchen description. Just a few lines—"haphazardly placed pots and pans, but aside from that, it was practically empty"—and I could feel the damp cold of that place. Eight eggs in a corner. Half a jar of coarse rice. A small bag of flour. That's it. That's all they had. And yet when she ladled out the egg drop dough ball soup, the aroma was enough to make anyone's mouth water. The author made me literally hungry reading that. There's something so powerful about showing poverty without melodrama and then having someone cook what they have into something that smells amazing. His voice is consistent throughout: short, cynical, occasionally flustered when he doesn't know how to respond to kindness. The moment his stomach growls and he tries to deny being hungry? Chef's kiss. That's not just dialogue, that's character. Ye Ningxin's voice is equally distinct. She's got this modern, no-nonsense energy that contrasts perfectly with the historical setting. "Eat it or not, suit yourself"—she's not performing emotion, she's just being direct. And her internal monologue is where the humor lives. Her thoughts about the original host being "utterly foolish," her lament about not transmigrating into a renowned physician's body, her assessment that the Prince is at least good-looking so she can endure his temper—these are the lines that made me laugh out loud.
