The narrative introduces Pei Shuye, a former top scholar who was exiled for five years due to political entanglements with the Chen Sanfu case. Upon his return as Vice Commissioner, he becomes the center of intense marital competition among Ningbo’s aristocratic families, who seek to align themselves with his restored political influence.

Parallel to this political backdrop, the story follows Xu Miaoxue, a resourceful orphan and skilled con artist known as Bei Luocha. Living under the oppressive control of her aunt in the Cheng family, Xu Miaoxue survives by executing elaborate scams. Her latest scheme involves deceiving merchant Zhao Jin into purchasing a fake Ruyi Harbor invitation, which she obtains by impersonating the concubine of a high-ranking salt inspector.
