Lu Yujiao is a young woman from a rural village who carries a dark reputation. Their idyllic retreat is shattered when Lu Yujiao's aunt, Ma Ying, tracks her down with the help of Lin Gaolang, a rogue acquaintance of Lu Jingze who was left to guard the cabin. Ma Ying, desperate to collect the bride price paid by Old Shui, forcibly takes Lu Yujiao back. She locks her in a storage shed and arranges for Old Shui to take her that very night. Lu Yujiao endures the humiliation and disgust of being led away on a donkey, her hopes of escape dimming as darkness falls.

Just as Old Shui prepares to consummate the marriage, Lu Jingze bursts through the door. Having realized the danger, he raced back and intervened violently, beating Old Shui unconscious and rescuing Lu Yujiao. He brings her back to his family home, defying his parents' outrage and the village's judgment. Lu Jingze declares that Lu Yujiao is his wife and announces his intention to report their marriage to the military organization upon his return. The story concludes with Lu Yujiao standing by Lu Jingze's side, facing his family's disapproval and the village's scorn, as their relationship transitions from a desperate rescue to a formal, albeit controversial, union.
