The 50s Contract Family: We Agreed to Raise Kids Together

In the winter of 1949, amidst the chaos of a transitioning nation, Jiang Zhen, a survivor of a post-apocalyptic future, finds herself transported into the body of a woman who shares her name. The original Jiang Zhen had been murdered by bandits while fleeing with two children, an act orchestrated by a hidden enemy. Having inherited the woman’s identity, documents, and a mysterious spatial ability that allows her to read memories at the cost of the subject’s life, Jiang Zhen assumes the role of a widowed mother in New China. She is driven by the pragmatic need to secure a legal household registration for herself and the two children, Jiang Zhao and Jiang Tang, whom she must protect from the threats that pursued the original owner of this body.

After being rescued by soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army, Jiang Zhen uses her medical skills to secure a position at a local hospital. There, she encounters Gu Liancheng, a battalion commander who had once shown her kindness by offering food and water during the rescue. Unbeknownst to Jiang Zhen, Gu Liancheng has also been reborn, retaining memories of a previous timeline where he died in battle and his family suffered tragic fates. In this new life, his former fiancée, An Xiuqing, has broken off their engagement out of fear and has instead pursued a marriage with Doctor Qi. Gu Liancheng, seeking stability and a partner to raise his late brother’s children, Gu Pan and Gu Hui, proposes a contractual marriage devoid of romantic entanglement.

The core conflict arises from the intersection of Jiang Zhen’s need for legal status and Gu Liancheng’s desire for a practical partnership. Both parties have conditions that initially seem excessive to others: Jiang Zhen demands a partner who shares household chores and strictly forbids domestic violence, while Gu Liancheng requires a wife who will raise his two nephews and with whom he will not have biological children for ten years. Their blind date reveals that their requirements are perfectly aligned. They agree to a marriage of convenience, presenting a united front to the outside world while maintaining separate emotional boundaries.

As the wedding approaches, tensions escalate with the An and Qi families. An Xiuqing, driven by secrets from her past life, manipulates events to marry into the Qi family, only to discover she has been tricked into marrying Qi Junshan, the one-eyed bandit leader responsible for the original Jiang Zhen’s murder. Jiang Zhen identifies Qi Junshan during the wedding procession, confirming he is the man she had previously wounded. This revelation shifts the narrative from a domestic arrangement to a survival struggle against a lethal enemy who seeks revenge.

The story moves toward a complex domestic and political landscape. Jiang Zhen and Gu Liancheng navigate their new roles as parents to four children, balancing the affection of the children with the rigid terms of their contract. Meanwhile, the organization Gu Liancheng serves begins to suspect anomalies regarding Jiang Zhen’s identity, given her unusual skills and knowledge. The narrative sets the stage for Jiang Zhen to use her future knowledge and spatial abilities to protect her family, expose the bandit conspiracy, and establish a secure place in this new era, all while managing the intricate dynamics of a blended family formed under the watchful eyes of a changing society.
