Shen Chutang is the youngest and only daughter of the prominent Shen family in Beijing. Born after her three older brothers, she is cherished and pampered by her entire family. At a dinner gathering hosted by Shi Chengyu, a young woman named Zhou Qian rudely corrects Shen Chutang for sitting in the main seat, unaware of the unspoken rules that designate Shen Chutang as the most honored guest. Shi Chengyu publicly defends her, reinforcing her status and alienating Zhou Qian. Later, a woman named Lin Chushuang, claiming to be an old friend from Shi Chengyu's childhood, visits the Shi residence. She mentions that Shi Chengyu's grandfather once joked about arranging a marriage between them. Shen Chutang, feeling insecure and jealous, retreats to her grandfather's mountain villa, leaving a single homemade cookie behind.

Shi Chengyu discovers the cookie and realizes Shen Chutang has left. He immediately cancels his schedule and rushes to the mountain villa to find her. He locates her by a stream, eating watermelon and soaking her feet in the cold water. He gently scolds her for neglecting her health and comforts her about Lin Chushuang, insisting he has no history or feelings for the woman. Shen Chutang confesses her jealousy, and Shi Chengyu promises that Lin Chushuang will never visit again. He takes her back to the villa, where they share a quiet meal of dumplings, reaffirming their close bond.

The story also explores the dynamics within the Shen family. Shen Chutang's brothers, particularly Shen Sichen and Shen Sujing, dote on her but often tease her. Shen Sichen is involved in a business dispute with the Zhou family, which Shi Chengyu handles with severity, blocking the Zhou family from apologizing directly to Shen Chutang. This incident highlights how the Shen and Shi families are intertwined, with Shi Chengyu acting as a protector of the Shen family's honor. Meanwhile, Shen Chutang's friendship with Xie Tong provides a contrast to her sheltered life, as Xie Tong is lively and outgoing. The narrative follows Shen Chutang's daily life, her interactions with Shi Chengyu, and the subtle tensions caused by outside intrusions into their private world, ultimately focusing on the deep, exclusive attachment between the two protagonists.
