Jiang Shiyue, a thirty-year-old woman from the modern era, falls asleep on her birthday and wakes up in the body of a young woman in 1970s rural China. She finds herself in the middle of a wedding night with a rugged, scarred man named Gu Yian, having previously mistaken him for her idealized romantic fantasy. Upon regaining her senses, she discovers a transparent interface in her vision, revealing that she has transmigrated into an Era Literature novel she had skimmed the day before. She is no longer the protagonist but the vicious female supporting character who shares her name. In the original story, this character ruined her life by obsessively pursuing Liang Zeyuan, a manipulative and scummy male lead, while tormenting the true female lead, Lin Wan'er. The original Jiang Shiyue was a spoiled wealthy young lady whose family supported her delusion, only to be abandoned and sent to prison for stabbing the female lead during the college entrance exams.
The current plot point places Jiang Shiyue at the moment she married Gu Yian, a man with a bad reputation in the village, solely to make Liang Zeyuan jealous. However, Liang Zeyuan is indifferent to her marriage and continues to exploit her financially. Jiang Shiyue, retaining her modern mindset and knowledge of the plot, decides to reject her original fate. She realizes that Gu Yian, despite his rough exterior and poor family background, is actually a kind, hardworking, and physically capable man who treats her with unexpected care. Unlike Liang Zeyuan, who views her as a cash cow, Gu Yian is devoted and protective. Jiang Shiyue resolves to build a genuine life with him, leveraging her knowledge of future events and a mysterious system-like mall that allows her to purchase modern goods in exchange for currency or items from the past.
A key turning point occurs when Jiang Shiyue encounters Liang Zeyuan at the Educated Youth Center. Instead of pleading for his attention as the original character would have, she coldly demands he write an IOU for all the money and coupons he has borrowed from her. She refuses to give him any more resources, effectively cutting off his financial lifeline. When Liang Zeyuan attempts to gaslight her, claiming he loves only her and will marry her upon returning to the city, Jiang Shiyue dismisses him, declaring that she now loves only her husband, Gu Yian. This decisive break from her past behavior confuses Liang Zeyuan, who is unaccustomed to her lack of devotion, but he remains arrogant, believing she will eventually return to him.
Jiang Shiyue begins to transform her relationship with Gu Yian. She cooks for him, manages their household, and openly expresses her desire to build a future together, which deeply moves the insecure man who fears she will regret marrying someone with his political background. She also contacts her mother, Ruan Qiuhua, to inform her of the marriage and requests a Letter of Introduction to formalize their union, signaling her intent to integrate into this family rather than run back to her parents. Jiang Shiyue also identifies an economic opportunity, planning to start a business selling modern-style clothing and fabrics at the local black market, using her mall to source high-quality goods that are scarce in this era. She partners with a post office worker named Xia Yao, who helps her navigate the local market dynamics.
As the story progresses, Jiang Shiyue and Gu Yian's relationship deepens through mutual respect and affection. Gu Yian, initially wary of her past obsession with Liang Zeyuan, becomes increasingly devoted after experiencing her genuine care and domestic partnership. Jiang Shiyue, in turn, grows to appreciate Gu Yian's loyalty and strength, finding him far more suitable than the frail and manipulative Liang Zeyuan. She takes steps to protect her family from the disasters that befell them in the original novel, using her foresight and resources to avoid the pitfalls that Liang Zeyuan would have created. The narrative follows her efforts to establish financial independence, strengthen her marriage, and rewrite the tragic fate assigned to her character, moving away from the destructive love triangle that defined the original plot.
