Jiang Yi is the eightieth-generation successor of the declining Wuming Daoist Temple, having been abandoned as a child and raised by a crooked temple that was eventually stripped of its property. Raised by a spectral Ancestor Grandma whose spirit resides in a wooden tablet, she possesses genuine magical abilities but lacks modern worldly knowledge. After years of living in isolation in the mountains, constantly thwarted by her ancestor's mischievous demands for material goods and entertainment, Jiang Yi is finally compelled to descend the mountain to seek income and stability. She carries only her Spirit Tablet, a Suona, and a meager amount of cash, entering the modern world with no understanding of currency or social norms.

Upon arriving in Liaoping County, Jiang Yi struggles to establish herself as a feng shui master, facing harassment from a skeptical old man and constant interruptions from city inspectors. Her first significant opportunity arises when she discovers that the small inn where she is staying is afflicted by a Yin-Gathering Formation, a dark art designed to drain the life force of the owner, Sister Chen. Jiang Yi identifies that the formation was cast by Chen's ex-husband, Lao Wanping, in collusion with a cultivator in the nearby city of Huashi, who sought to inherit Chen's property after her death. The resolution of the haunting inadvertently brings Jiang Yi into the spotlight.
