Summary

Memory cards priced by cost and rarity, where the poor can spend a few hundred to taste wines worth tens of thousands, where the paralyzed can experience walking freely, where the blind can see a clear bright world. It's escapism commodified, and it's horrifying in its accessibility. I have to talk about this one scene because it absolutely wrecked me in the best way. You've got this construction site in the East District — which the text tells us is the poorer area where manicured greenery is a rare sight — and there's this tiny five or six year old boy who's been tending a peach tree sprout he planted himself. He's got this crooked little fence made of twigs around it, and the trucks are supposed to drive right through that patch of ground. The foreman is all like hey kid move along we have work to do, and Cen Xie recognizes him from around the streets and had even given him a peach once, which is such a small detail but it makes the whole thing feel so lived-in. What I love about this scene is how the worldbuilding just naturally bleeds into the action without any exposition dumps. We learn about the post-war political structure not being fully formed, so there's no urban greening department. We learn about the West District getting priority because the rich live there. We learn that Alphas make up over 70% of the prison population and that's why they're the ones doing this outdoor labor — not because Ying Zhu is being personally biased, but because if Alphas aren't given strenuous physical work their tempers become explosive. The Gland Lock detail is also worldbuilding gold: they're expensive, only A-rank and above get them, and once prisoners leave the prison environment the self-destruct function ensures they remain submissive. This is a whole economic system built into the narrative — the prisoners are essentially paying for their own restraints through their labor. And then Ying Zhu just... changes the transport route. Two days delay, no big deal, just because a kid has a little plant he's been caring about. The kid's reaction — lighting up and running to grab a bucket to water his sapling — is the kind of moment that makes you realize this world actually has people in it who matter, not just plot devices. The image of that fragile green sprout surrounded by heavy machinery and dust and Alpha sweat is something I will not be forgetting anytime soon.
