Reversed Fate in the 70s: Marrying the Factory Director rather than Rough Man

Jiang Li, a modern woman who lived a carefree life as a slacker with rental income, transmigrates into the body of a poor, abused girl in 1975 rural China. The original Jiang Li was an orphan raised by her greedy grandmother and uncle, forced into servitude while her cousin Jiang Hongmei lived in comfort. In her previous life within the novel's plot, Jiang Li married Zhuang Guoliang, a man who later became a wealthy entrepreneur, only for her family to exploit her until her death. Jiang Hongmei, meanwhile, married Qi Shaoqiang, a cold and distant soldier, leading to a miserable existence. Upon waking in this new reality, Jiang Li discovers that Jiang Hongmei has also been reborn and is determined to avoid her tragic fate by rejecting Qi Shaoqiang and securing a better marriage.

The story begins with Jiang Hongmei attempting to force Jiang Li to take her place in the engagement with Qi Shaoqiang. However, Jiang Li, aware of Qi Shaoqiang’s true character and his eventual success, refuses to be manipulated. She cunningly exposes Jiang Hongmei’s attempt to cancel the engagement, causing chaos within the Jiang family. Qi Shaoqiang, a retired captain and combat hero, arrives in the village and witnesses Jiang Li’s resilience and intelligence. Unlike the timid girl in the original story, Jiang Li stands up to bullies and handles conflicts with sharp wit. Qi Shaoqiang is drawn to her strength and beauty, and he intervenes when he learns of the abuse she suffers from her relatives, reporting the neglect of a martyr’s family to the brigade leadership.

As a result of Qi Shaoqiang’s intervention, Jiang Li is appointed as the brigade’s scorekeeper, a position that provides her with independence and a steady income. She moves into her late mother’s old room, reclaiming her heritage and asserting her rights against her exploitative family. Meanwhile, Zhuang Guoliang, the original male lead and a widower with two children, arrives in the village seeking Jiang Li as a stepmother. Jiang Li firmly rejects him, citing her mysophobia and his unsuitable lifestyle, which frustrates Jiang Hongmei, who had hoped to steal this match for herself. Jiang Hongmei’s desperation grows as she tries to sabotage Jiang Li’s relationship with Qi Shaoqiang, but Jiang Li remains composed and strategic.

The central conflict shifts as Qi Shaoqiang openly declares his intention to court Jiang Li with marriage in mind. He supports her financially, providing cloth coupons and money for clothes, and stands by her during conflicts with rude shop clerks. Their relationship develops through mutual respect and shared moments, with Qi Shaoqiang admiring Jiang Li’s independence and Jiang Li appreciating his sincerity and protection. A rival, Wu Meiling, who has feelings for Qi Shaoqiang, attempts to undermine Jiang Li but is rebuffed by Qi Shaoqiang’s firm loyalty to Jiang Li. The narrative follows Jiang Li’s journey from an abused orphan to a woman gaining autonomy, navigating family intrigue and romantic entanglements in the socio-political landscape of 1970s China.

Jiang Li’s transformation is marked by her refusal to be a victim. She confronts her grandmother’s abuse, secures her mother’s pension, and builds a life on her own terms. Qi Shaoqiang’s role evolves from a distant figure to a protective partner who validates her worth. The story highlights the contrast between the two cousins’ fates, with Jiang Li breaking the cycle of exploitation through intelligence and self-reliance. As Jiang Hongmei’s schemes fail and her own romantic prospects deteriorate, Jiang Li and Qi Shaoqiang’s bond strengthens, setting the stage for their future together amidst the challenges of their era.
