Before Anna met Daniel, she was just a gemstone runner in the mining districts—abandoned by her ex-boyfriend, suppressed and scorned by others.
After becoming involved with him, her career smoothed out; there was no resource she couldn't obtain. Even at events, insiders and industry elites would step aside for her.
Later, when he was set to enter into an arranged marriage, she said, "Let's end it here. No hard feelings. We can still be friends."
He gave a cold laugh. "I don't stay friends with ex-girlfriends."
Then he drove away.
That day, snow fell heavily over the city. Anna gave a self-mocking smile, her heart filled with desolation.
When they met again four years later, she had completed her studies and was about to walk down the aisle. He had become even more successful, soaring to new heights, no longer constrained by anyone.
She had finally learned to let go, but he refused to release her.
Not long after, on a stormy night.
She huddled in a dark corner, trembling. "What will it take for you to let me go? Mr. Williams, someone like you and someone like me—we're not meant to be... Please, show mercy."
Not far away, Daniel sat quietly on a sofa, his eyes lowered.

He vaguely remembered that when they were together, every time he returned from a business trip, she would wait eagerly at the gate, looking forward to his arrival.
