Reborn to Live a Sweet Little Life

Jiang Siyi, a young woman from 1975 China, dies after being betrayed and pushed off a cliff by her former lover Zhang Jianjun and his accomplice Bai Qingying. Upon reopening her eyes, she finds herself reborn on the train heading to the Heilongjiang countryside as an educated youth, moments before the events that led to her death. She realizes she is a disposable side character in a novel, destined to fund the lives of the male and female leads until she is discarded. Determined to break free from this script, Jiang Siyi resolves to reject Zhang Jianjun’s manipulations, pursue her own future, and take the college entrance exam to secure a better life for herself and her parents.

Upon arriving at Daqingshan Brigade, Jiang Siyi immediately distances herself from Zhang Jianjun, refusing his demands for money and companionship. Unlike her previous life, where she was compelled to obey him, she now feels free to resist. She befriends Zhao Sufen, another new sent-down youth, and they decide to cook separately to avoid the poor communal meals and Zhang Jianjun’s influence. Jiang Siyi discovers she possesses a personal spatial dimension containing a fully equipped villa with a stocked refrigerator and closet, which renews itself periodically. This advantage allows her to live comfortably despite the scarcity of the era.

Li Jingchen, the son of the brigade leader, takes an immediate interest in Jiang Siyi after seeing her. Despite the age gap, he persistently pursues her, helping her with farm work, securing housing for her and Zhao Sufen, and providing food and supplies. Jiang Siyi, initially wary due to her past trauma, gradually recognizes his sincerity and kindness. She maintains boundaries but accepts his help when necessary, such as when he assists in building a stove and planting vegetables. Their relationship develops through shared daily activities and mutual support within the rural community.

Conflict arises when Zhang Jianjun, desperate for financial support, attempts to borrow money from Jiang Siyi again. She publicly refuses him, exposing his greed to the villagers. Bai Qingying, jealous of Jiang Siyi’s popularity and Li Jingchen’s attention, conspires against her. She manipulates a village simpleton to harass Jiang Siyi, causing her to fall into a river. Li Jingchen rescues her and performs CPR, leading to rumors that he took advantage of her. Li Jingchen fiercely defends her reputation by punishing the gossipers and confronting the simpleton, revealing his determination to protect Jiang Siyi.

Bai Qingying’s schemes escalate as she spreads rumors about an illicit relationship between Zhang Jianjun and herself, leading to social scandal. Jiang Siyi remains focused on her studies and daily life, using her spatial resources to prepare for the upcoming college entrance exams. She navigates the complex social dynamics of the village, earning respect from some villagers like Jiang Qiuhua while facing hostility from others like Zhang Huifang. The story highlights her struggle for independence and self-determination in a restrictive environment, as she seeks to rewrite her fate away from the tragic path of her previous life.

As winter approaches, Jiang Siyi continues to build a stable life with Zhao Sufen in their rented house. Li Jingchen’s courtship becomes more overt, though Jiang Siyi remains cautious about romantic entanglements. The narrative follows her efforts to balance her academic goals with the demands of rural labor and social interactions. She uses her knowledge of the future and her spatial advantages to gain an edge, preparing for a future where she is no longer a pawn in someone else’s story. The tension between her desire for a quiet, independent life and the interference of those from her past creates ongoing drama, setting the stage for her eventual triumph over the forces that sought to control her destiny.
