Reborn in the 80s: How the Side Character Conquered the Boss

Cheng Yuanyue is a modern fashion designer who transmigrates into the body of an eighteen-year-old girl in a 1988 rural setting. In the original novel, this character was a minor, tragic figure known as a husband-killer who was forced into marriage with an abusive older man and died within three months. Upon realizing her fate, Yuanyue decides to alter her destiny by rejecting the passive, obedient personality of the original owner. Her family, led by her mother Shen Xiuying and grandmother, views her solely as a resource to save their favored eldest son, Cheng Jiafu. When Jiafu injures a local thug and faces imprisonment, the family attempts to marry Yuanyue to a wealthy but abusive fifty-two-year-old widower, Boss Qiao, to pay the compensation debt.

Yuanyue feigns obedience while secretly planning her survival. Before the wedding, she discovers the male lead of the novel, Lu Chen, hiding gravely wounded in a mountain cave. She treats his injuries and, in a bold move, sleeps with him to secure a connection to the story’s protagonist, hoping he might help her later. On her wedding day, Boss Qiao dies unexpectedly, nullifying the marriage. The family then attempts to marry her off to Wu Tianyou, the thug her brother fought, to resolve the remaining debt. Wu Tianyou attempts to assault Yuanyue, but she uses a venomous snake to bite him, causing him to be hospitalized. This reinforces her reputation as a jinx, and the Wu family, seeking revenge, arranges for her to be sent to He Shenhua, a rival of Wu’s uncle, with the intent that she might harm him as well.

While staying at a guesthouse, Yuanyue accidentally encounters Lu Chen, who is recovering from his injuries. She hides under his bed and is discovered, but instead of punishing her, he engages in a sexual encounter with her, recognizing her from the cave. Lu Chen is a powerful factory director with amnesia regarding his past. He is suspicious of her motives but intrigued by her shameless and bold nature. Meanwhile, the novel’s heroine, Su Peipei, is drugged and sent to Lu Chen’s room by her uncle, but Lu Chen refuses her advances and sends her to the hospital, deviating from the original plot. Yuanyue witnesses this and realizes her presence is already changing the story’s trajectory.

Yuanyue uses her fashion design skills to secure a position at a state-run garment factory, presenting innovative designs that impress the director. She negotiates a deal where she receives payment only if her designs are successful, allowing her to earn money and gain independence. Back at home, she confronts her family, threatening her brother with a knife to prevent them from using her marriage for their benefit again. She establishes dominance in the household, forcing her brother to do chores and ensuring her younger sister, Fangfang, is protected. She enrolls Fangfang in school, investing in her education as a means to escape their poverty.

The story follows Yuanyue as she navigates her new career and her complex relationship with Lu Chen. She maintains a facade of meekness around her family while plotting to build a life independent of them. Lu Chen, meanwhile, becomes increasingly obsessed with finding the woman who slept with him in the cave, unaware that it is the same woman he interacts with in town. As Yuanyue gains financial stability and social standing, she continues to evade the traditional fate assigned to her, using her knowledge of the novel’s plot to avoid the heroine and manipulate events in her favor. The narrative focuses on her struggle for autonomy in a patriarchal society, her budding romance with the male lead, and her efforts to rewrite the tragic ending of the original story.
