Lian Nanshu is a modern woman who transmigrated into the body of a side character in a novel. In the original story, the host, also named Lian Nanshu, was a village girl who forced the male lead, Lan Xubai, into marriage through scandalous means. After Lan Xubai joined the military and sought a divorce, the original Lian Nanshu attempted suicide by jumping into a lake during a storm. She drowned, and subsequently, her entire family perished in a flood. A key turning point occurs when Lian Nanshu is harassed by Wang Jinming, a man she rejected in college who is now obsessed with her. Lan Xubai intervenes, physically defending her and publicly claiming her as his wife. This act shocks Wang Jinming and establishes Lan Xubai's protective role. Later, at Grandpa Lin's birthday banquet, Lian Nanshu meets Lan Xubai's family, including his mother, Luo Qingshu. Instead of being hostile, Luo Qingshu is warm and welcoming, urging Lian Nanshu to have children with her son to ensure he has family support given the dangers of his military career. This unexpected acceptance confuses Lian Nanshu, who had prepared for rejection.

Another significant shift happens when Lan Xubai confronts Liao Meimei, the novel's original female lead. He clearly rejects her romantic advances, stating that he will not divorce his wife and that their past connection was one-sided. This declaration solidifies his commitment to Lian Nanshu, leaving Liao Meimei heartbroken but unable to intervene. Lian Nanshu, witnessing this, feels a mix of guilt and relief. She realizes that Lan Xubai is no longer following the original plot but has carved a new path where he chooses her. Despite this, she remains cautious, unsure of his true intentions and fearful of getting hurt again.

The story direction moves toward a gradual deepening of their relationship. Lan Xubai moves into Lian Nanshu's home, initially sleeping on the sofa but showing clear interest in intimacy. He learns about her past hardships, including the harassment she endured and her financial struggles, which fuels his desire to protect and provide for her. Lian Nanshu, in turn, begins to see his sincerity, though she still harbors doubts. The narrative explores their adjustment to living together, the interference of external suitors like Wang Jinming, and the evolving dynamics with Lan Xubai's family and friends. As they navigate these challenges, the boundary between the original novel's fate and their new reality blurs, setting the stage for a romance built on mutual understanding rather than obligation.
