Song Suiyuan is a reborn individual who previously served as a high-ranking official in the Great Chu dynasty, only to witness the collapse of the empire due to the incompetence of the new emperor and the treachery of powerful factions. Having died with regrets, he returns to his youth with the intention of avoiding the court and living a carefree life. However, his past experiences drive him to subtly guide the Crown Prince, Zhou Mingyan, away from the political traps that destroyed him in his previous life. His primary goal is to protect the Crown Prince from the ambitious Third Prince and his maternal Wei family, who seek to usurp military power and destabilize the throne.
The story begins with Zhou Mingyan visiting Song Suiyuan to deliver a white cat named Ah Yan, a gift from Yun Xiu, the heir to the Duke of the State in the northwest. Song Suiyuan accepts the cat, unaware that Ah Yan is not an ordinary animal but the reincarnated form of Yun Xiu himself, who possesses the ability to transform between cat and human. Yun Xiu, having grown up in the harsh northwest military environment, is initially wary of Song Suiyuan but is drawn to his elegance and kindness. The cat becomes Song Suiyuan's companion, and their interactions reveal a growing bond, though Song Suiyuan remains suspicious of the cat's unusual intelligence and behavior.
A significant turning point occurs when the Third Prince dies under mysterious circumstances while guarding the imperial tomb. Song Suiyuan, aware of the political intrigue, suspects foul play and subtly influences Zhou Mingyan to take decisive action against the Third Prince's faction. This move weakens the Wei family's influence and secures the Crown Prince's position, aligning with Song Suiyuan's strategic goals. Meanwhile, Song Suiyuan's own life takes a chaotic turn when he visits Liuxiang Pavilion, a famous entertainment district, where he encounters Shi Wan, a courtesan who attempts to seduce him using aphrodisiac wine. Unaware of the wine's effects, Song Suiyuan becomes intoxicated and experiences a vivid dream in which he engages in an intimate encounter with a mysterious young man who bites and scratches him.
Upon waking, Song Suiyuan discovers physical marks on his body and realizes the encounter was not a dream. He launches an investigation to identify the stranger, who is revealed to be Yun Xiu in human form. Yun Xiu, having transformed into a human to drink the remaining wine, accidentally enters Song Suiyuan's room and initiates the encounter. The two men navigate the awkward aftermath, with Song Suiyuan demanding answers and Yun Xiu struggling to maintain his secret identity. Their relationship evolves from suspicion to a complex dynamic of mutual attraction and hidden agendas.
Song Suiyuan decides to retreat to his villa at the foot of Sanghua Mountain to escape the political turmoil and the growing attention from his family, who pressure him to marry. There, he continues to care for Ah Yan, who remains in cat form but displays increasingly human-like behaviors. The villa provides a temporary sanctuary where Song Suiyuan can reflect on his past life and plan his next moves. He remains committed to guiding Zhou Mingyan toward a prosperous reign while keeping himself at a distance from the center of power. The narrative sets the stage for further political maneuvering and the development of Song Suiyuan's relationship with Yun Xiu, as both characters navigate their hidden identities and evolving feelings.
