Meng Yao and Meng Yu are sisters in a rural Chinese village during the late 1970s. Meng Yao is the elder daughter, raised with sacrifice after Meng Yu was lost as a child and found three years later. Their grandfather, a martyr, secured engagements for both daughters: Meng Yao to Song Wei, a squad leader in the capital, and Meng Yu to Gu Jingcheng, the heir to a capitalist family with a factory.
