Li Baoling, a modern woman, wakes up in a communal bunk bed after being struck by a car, only to realize she has transmigrated into the body of a girl with the same name in a 1970s Chinese novel titled Shen Xiangyang’s Countryside Chronicles. The original Li Baoling was the middle child in a patriarchal Beijing family that favored her brothers. Her parents and sister-in-law stripped her of her coveted machinery factory job to secure a position for her younger brother, Li Xiaodi, and forced her to be sent down to the countryside. Upon arrival, the original Li Baoling was exploited by her roommate Zhang Lihua, who forced her to do excessive labor until Baoling fell into a river and drowned. Li Baoling’s arrival coincides with this fatal event, giving her a second chance in a hostile environment.
The new Li Baoling quickly assesses her dire situation. She is poor, malnourished, and surrounded by enemies. Her family had spread rumors that she was sent to the countryside for love, specifically for Shen Xiangyang, the novel’s male lead. In the book, Shen Xiangyang is a handsome but manipulative playboy who drains the savings of his female acquaintances, including the original Baoling. Zhang Lihua, Baoling’s roommate, orchestrated the rumor to prevent Baoling from marrying well, driven by jealousy over Baoling’s job and Shen Xiangyang’s attention. Baoling also discovers that Shen Xiangyang has borrowed over thirty yuan and food stamps from her, which she intends to reclaim. The educated youth station is a minefield of petty conflicts, with Geng Jiajia openly hostile due to her own crush on Shen Xiangyang, while Bai Xiujuan remains neutral but kind.
A pivotal turning point occurs when Baoling encounters Lin Mingyuan by the river. Lin Mingyuan is the son of the local production team leader, known locally as a handsome but useless pretty boy who avoids farm work. Unbeknownst to Baoling, Lin Mingyuan is also a transmigrator from the modern era, having been the driver of the red sports car that hit her. He too is trapped in this body and era, struggling with the harsh rural life and secretively eating eggs to avoid his father’s wrath. Recognizing each other as fellow outsiders, they form an immediate alliance. Baoling proposes a marriage of convenience to escape the abusive dynamics of the youth hostel and gain access to the Lin family’s relatively better resources. She argues that they can use their future knowledge to succeed, particularly anticipating the reinstatement of the College Entrance Exam in 1977.
Lin Mingyuan agrees to the plan, and they devise a cover story of love at first sight to satisfy his traditional family. Lin Mingyuan returns home and announces his intention to marry the educated youth he rescued. His father, Lin Guoqing, initially reacts with violence, fearing social gossip, but eventually relents after Lin Mingyuan’s persistent performance and his mother Sun Zhaodi’s approval. Sun Zhaodi visits Baoling and is won over by her sincerity and flattering words, fully accepting her as a daughter-in-law. Baoling secures her escape from the youth hostel, planning to marry into the Lin family to gain independence and a platform for economic improvement.
As the story progresses, Baoling confronts Shen Xiangyang, demanding the repayment of his debts. She uses the threat of her future in-laws to pressure him, revealing that she is no longer the submissive victim he exploited. Shen Xiangyang is shocked by her transformation, as the original Baoling was depicted as infatuated with him. Baoling also cuts ties with Zhang Lihua, recognizing her toxic jealousy. The narrative shifts focus from survival in the youth hostel to Baoling’s integration into the Lin family and her strategic planning for the future. She and Lin Mingyuan begin to navigate their new roles, leveraging their modern knowledge and the Lin family’s social standing to improve their circumstances while avoiding the pitfalls of the novel’s original plot.
The couple’s partnership is built on mutual benefit and shared secret knowledge. They discuss wedding preparations, with Lin Mingyuan encouraging Baoling to ask for a substantial bride price, arguing that she deserves it as the favored partner in this arrangement. Baoling agrees, realizing that the Lin family’s resources are a legitimate asset for their future. The story establishes a dynamic where the two protagonists work together to rewrite their fates, distancing themselves from the male lead’s harem-centric plot and focusing on personal prosperity and academic advancement. Their relationship evolves from a pragmatic contract into a genuine partnership as they face the challenges of rural life in the 1970s.
