Ting Wan, an outstanding intern from the Interstellar Alliance, awakens as the head of the Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Department. Accompanied only by System 666, she faces a backlog of missions from female characters who suffered tragic fates as mere plot devices. Her first assignment takes her into the world of a Republic of China-era romance novel titled Young Marshal’s Sweet Wife: Spoiled Little Jasmine. In this narrative, she inhabits the body of Su Youning, the eldest daughter of the Su family and the fiancée of the cold, paranoid Young Marshal Xiao Tang. Su Youning’s original fate was dire: after fleeing her arranged marriage on the advice of her seemingly kind half-sister, Su Xiaomo, she was hunted down, abandoned by her father, and ultimately killed by Xiao Tang when she attempted to reclaim her mother’s dowry. Su Xiaomo, the novel’s female lead, stole the dowry and married Xiao Tang, living happily ever after while Su Youning perished in obscurity.
Upon arriving in Liu City, Ting Wan quickly assesses her situation. She discovers that Su Xiaomo possesses a manipulative halo that causes everyone around her, including servants and family members, to idolize her blindly. The personal maid, Xiao Cui, openly praises Su Xiaomo while disparaging Su Youning, and the family patriarch, Mr. Su, favors the younger daughter due to her beauty and social grace. Ting Wan realizes that to survive and achieve her goal of protecting her mother’s legacy, she must escape the role of a romantic cannon fodder. She identifies a critical anomaly in the world: characters who are not influenced by the leads’ halos are members of the Red Faction, a revolutionary organization. Determined to dedicate herself to a meaningful cause, Ting Wan decides to join the Red Faction rather than follow the original plot.
Ting Wan’s first major move involves infiltrating the drama club at her school to get closer to Sang Yuan, the club’s vice president and a liaison for the Red Faction. When Sang Yuan arrives and rebuffs the club’s trivial activities, Ting Wan seizes the opportunity to approach her. She demonstrates her proficiency in advanced makeup techniques, capable of transforming a person’s appearance so drastically that they become unrecognizable. Impressed by this skill, which is invaluable for underground operations, Sang Yuan agrees to let Ting Wan join the organization. Ting Wan adopts the codename Ting Wan and begins training with the Red Faction, learning that her new ally has a soft spot for her seemingly delicate and spoiled persona.
As the Su family prepares to move to Hong City, Ting Wan outsmarts her father. She convinces Mr. Su to deposit her mother’s dowry, including a precious embroidered wedding veil, into a bank account under her own name, using the Sang family’s connections as leverage. She then provides her father with a forged deposit slip, ensuring the dowry remains secure and out of Su Xiaomo’s reach. During the journey to Hong City, Ting Wan maintains her cover while observing Su Xiaomo’s continued attempts to undermine her. Upon arrival, Ting Wan uses a letter of recommendation from Sang Yuan to enroll at Hongcheng Women’s University, moving into a dormitory to avoid her family’s control. There, she meets Bai He, another Red Faction member, and begins her work in the city.
Ting Wan soon discovers a significant deviation from the original novel: Su Xiaomo is also a transmigrator who is aware of the plot and frustrated that Ting Wan is no longer following her scripted role. This revelation changes Ting Wan’s approach. Knowing the world is already damaged by Su Xiaomo’s presence, Ting Wan feels less constrained by the need to preserve the original storyline perfectly. She receives her first mission from the Red Faction: investigate Xiao Tang’s adjutant for suspicious meetings with foreigners at a local entertainment venue. Ting Wan and Bai He disguise themselves to gather intelligence, marking the beginning of her active resistance against the Young Marshal’s regime and her commitment to the revolutionary cause.
