Ning Wanwan is a Jade Rabbit Spirit who was caught stealing carrots from the Immortal Alliance. As punishment, she is forcibly bound to the 88th Fertility System and sent down to the mortal world. Her task is to help the child of destiny, General Wei Chenheng, who is unable to produce offspring, bear children so that she may eventually ascend to immortality. The system provides her with a Hundred-Treasure Pouch containing various fertility and enhancement pills. Wei Chenheng is the undefeated Young General of Great Jin, renowned for his bravery and loyalty but also for his abstinence and lack of interest in women. He is the target of a political scheme by Chancellor Ma Caiwen, who fears Wei Chenheng’s growing power. To undermine the Wei family, the Chancellor sends Ning Wanwan, disguised as his adopted daughter and a songstress from the Pavilion of Intoxicating Sounds, into Wei Manor as a concubine. In the original timeline, Wei Chenheng dies in battle without an heir, and Ning Wanwan suffers a tragic fate at the hands of the manor’s servants.
On their wedding night, Ning Wanwan attempts to seduce the drunken Wei Chenheng to begin her mission. Although he is initially resistant due to his disciplined nature, her persistent and coquettish advances eventually break down his defenses. They consummate their marriage, and although Ning Wanwan forgets to take the Fertility Pill that night, their relationship begins to develop. The following day, she faces hostility from Old Madam Wei, Wei Chenheng’s mother, and Second Aunt Wei, who resent her lowly background as a courtesan. Second Aunt Wei forces Ning Wanwan to kneel for an extended period as punishment, causing her physical pain. Wei Chenheng returns and discovers her condition. Furious at the mistreatment of his wife, he confronts his family, defends Ning Wanwan, and carries her away, declaring that he will teach her propriety himself. This marks a significant shift in his attitude, as he begins to protect and cherish her.
Wei Chenheng is soon called to the Northern Frontier to quell barbarian invasions. He decides to take Ning Wanwan with him, defying the expectations of propriety and his mother’s wishes. During their journey, they travel through Twin Peaks Mountain and stop in Lotus Town. The intimate travel conditions and Wei Chenheng’s growing affection lead to frequent physical intimacy. Ning Wanwan takes fertility pills during this time, hoping to conceive. Their bond deepens as they share moments of tenderness, such as picking wild peaches and bathing in a hidden hot spring. Ning Wanwan learns that Wei Chenheng is a respected figure in the region, having previously suppressed bandits in the area, which endears her to him further. She also discovers that he is not the cold, unfeeling man others perceive him to be, but rather a devoted and caring husband.
As they approach the border, Ning Wanwan learns from the system that Wei Chenheng is destined to suffer serious injury or death in the upcoming conflicts. She realizes that if he dies, her mission will fail, and she will be left a widow in a hostile environment. Determined to change his fate, she resolves to prevent the tragedy while ensuring she bears his child. The story follows their arrival at the Northern Frontier, where Ning Wanwan must navigate the dangers of war and court politics while maintaining her relationship with Wei Chenheng. Her goal is to secure his survival and their lineage, transforming her from a punished spirit into a powerful fairy.
