Xu Weizhao is a young university lecturer at Jiangzhou University who recently relocated from her hometown. Orphaned of a stable family structure due to her parents' divorce, she was raised by her grandmother, Ye Xiaojun, a retired teacher who instilled in her a strong sense of independence and resilience. Despite her academic excellence and striking beauty, Xu Weizhao lacks social connections or political backing in Jiangzhou, leaving her vulnerable in a competitive academic environment. Her primary antagonist is Zhong Zhiping, an associate professor in the Foreign Languages Department and the son of the university president. Zhong Zhiping, a privileged and entitled man who views women as conquests, becomes obsessed with Xu Weizhao after she repeatedly rejects his advances. His persistence escalates from unwanted gifts and public declarations to harassment and stalking.

The central conflict ignites during Jiangzhou University's 70th-anniversary celebrations. Xu Weizhao participates in a group dance performance, where she is noticed by Fang Suli, the Secretary-General of the Jiangzhou Municipal Party Committee. Fang Suli is a powerful political figure from a prominent military and political family, known for his authority, calm demeanor, and rapid rise in the provincial government. Their initial encounter occurs in a stairwell, where Xu Weizhao expresses her dislike for smokers, leaving a brief but memorable impression on Fang Suli. Shortly after, Xu Weizhao is drugged by Zhong Zhiping at a dinner hosted by Luo Yao, a jealous colleague who colludes with Zhong Zhiping to compromise Xu Weizhao. Intoxicated and disoriented, Xu Weizhao stumbles into a private room at a restaurant, where she encounters Fang Suli.
