Fang Xing, a high school senior on the verge of turning eighteen, travels from his hometown of Chaocheng to the city of Shaojiang under the pretense of continuing his education. His mother, Zhou Ling, has arranged for him to live with Jiang Zhijin, a man she describes as a family friend and neighbor. Fang Xing arrives during a severe typhoon, waiting outside a bar called Cloud Seven for Jiang Zhijin, who fails to answer his phone. After a long wait, he enters the establishment and learns from the staff, Zhou Hong and Gu Xun, that Jiang Zhijin has been hospitalized following a physical altercation. The group rushes to the hospital, where Fang Xing encounters Jiang Zhijin for the first time. Jiang Zhijin, a twenty-eight-year-old bar owner and military veteran, appears rough around the edges, sporting a bandaged arm and a demeanor that contrasts sharply with the gentle image Zhou Ling had painted.
