Li Qinkuai, a woman who lived a tragic life in 1970s rural China, is reborn back to the day she attempted to seduce Duan Pengyue, an educated youth sent down to her village. In her previous life, Li Qinkuai, desperate to escape the countryside and return to the city, drugged and forced herself on Duan Pengyue. She successfully married him and moved to the city, only to discover he was the son of a high-ranking official with a deep love for his childhood sweetheart, Qing Shuangyun. Li Qinkuai endured years of abuse and mockery from Duan Pengyue’s family and Qing Shuangyun, who eventually kidnapped and burned her to death. Upon waking in her nineteen-year-old body, Li Qinkuai immediately strikes Duan Pengyue with a stick to knock him unconscious and flees, determined to avoid the same fate.
Li Qinkuai returns home and lies to her supportive parents and older brother, claiming she let Duan Pengyue go because she no longer desires him. Her family, who had orchestrated the initial seduction plan to secure her a better life, is initially frustrated but eventually accepts her decision. Li Qinkuai discovers she has been granted a mystical space that allows her to exchange wild plants and animals for food and goods. She begins gathering wild resources, trading foxtail grass for pork and spiders for livestock, securing a comfortable life for her family without relying on Duan Pengyue. She also reconnects with her childhood friend, Qin An, a skilled hunter who helps her navigate the mountains.
Duan Pengyue, confused by Li Qinkuai’s sudden change in behavior, becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding her. When he finds her on the mountain with Qin An, his jealousy erupts, and he forcibly drags her away, demanding to know her relationship with the other woman. Li Qinkuai, seeking to end the entanglement, offers him pork and a chicken as compensation, hoping to sever all ties. However, Duan Pengyue, feeling his pride wounded and unwilling to let her go, creates a public scene by beating gongs and drums, accusing her of hooliganism and ruining his reputation. The village turns against Li Qinkuai, pressuring her family to take responsibility.
Faced with the threat of legal persecution and social ruin, Li Qinkuai’s father agrees to the marriage to protect his daughter. Duan Pengyue, however, reveals his true motive: he wants to marry her not out of love, but to keep her close and force her to acknowledge her feelings. He suspects she has fallen for someone else and wants to punish her by binding her to him. Li Qinkuai, realizing she cannot escape, agrees to the marriage but plans to make the Duan family dislike her so they will facilitate a divorce. She continues to use her space to accumulate wealth and resources, preparing for her future. The story follows her navigation of this forced marriage, the growing tension with Duan Pengyue, and her efforts to rewrite her destiny while protecting her family from the fate that befall them in her previous life.
