Officer Morofushi Wants to Save Himself

Morofushi Akihiko, known in the criminal underworld by the codename Scotch, is a senior undercover agent for the Japanese Public Security Intelligence Agency. After his identity is exposed while embedded within the powerful Yakuza-like syndicate known as the Soshiki, he faces immediate execution. Rather than be captured and tortured, he chooses to commit suicide by shooting himself. However, instead of dying, he awakens in a police academy classroom, physically restored to his twenty-two-year-old self. The environment is familiar, yet the faces around him are strangers, and his former allies are absent. His first instinct is to verify his reality and eliminate any risk of his true identity being compromised. He attempts to shoot himself again during a firearms training session, but the gun jams. When he tries to cut his throat in his dormitory with a fruit knife, the wound fails to kill him, leaving him confused about whether he is trapped in a psychological simulation, a technological projection created by the Soshiki, or a genuine temporal displacement.

Realizing that death is not an option, Morofushi shifts his strategy from suicide to investigation. He deduces that the Soshiki possesses advanced technology capable of projecting consciousness into simulated environments or possibly manipulating time. To protect his real-life colleagues and friends who are still undercover, he must maintain his cover as a model police academy student named Morofushi Akihiko while secretly uncovering the truth. He encounters Kato Akio, a Public Security officer who is secretly a Soshiki informant tasked with monitoring him. Morofushi also reconnects with Ueno, a kind-hearted classmate whose innocence contrasts sharply with the darkness Morofushi inhabits. During a weekend trip, Morofushi is confronted by Sotomori Hajime, a man obsessed with finding his daughter, who blames Morofushi’s father for her death. Morofushi冷静ly uses the encounter to solve a cold case, apprehending Sotomori and enhancing his reputation as a brilliant officer, which catches the attention of higher-ups.

His exceptional performance leads to a rare recommendation for a non-career track officer to join the Keisatsucho, the National Police Agency’s elite Public Security Bureau, rather than the local Keishicho. This placement inadvertently removes him from Kato Akio’s direct supervision, allowing Morofushi greater freedom to operate. He undergoes rigorous undercover training and is eventually deployed back into the Soshiki, this time as a double agent working for both the Public Security and the criminal organization. His cover identity is that of a low-level member named Midorikawa. During a cleanup operation for a Soshiki mission, he unexpectedly encounters Jinpei Matsuda, a former classmate and fellow undercover agent who was presumed dead after an explosion years prior. Matsuda, now a high-ranking technician and bomb expert within the Soshiki, does not recognize Morofushi’s true identity due to his mask and disguise.

Morofushi exploits the situation, allowing Matsuda to believe he is merely a subordinate named Midorikawa. He agrees to serve as Matsuda’s personal driver and assistant for two days, using the proximity to gather critical intelligence about the Soshiki’s internal hierarchy, codenames, and operations. Matsuda, unaware of the danger he is in, casually shares sensitive information, treating Morofushi as a trusted acquaintance. Morofushi successfully extracts Matsuda’s codename and his position within the Research and Development division. The narrative establishes a tense dynamic where Morofushi must balance his mission to dismantle the Soshiki from within with the emotional complexity of seeing a friend who should be dead. The story follows his calculated maneuvers as he navigates the treacherous waters of the criminal underworld, all while hiding his true self from both the enemy and the allies who may not yet know he has returned.
