My Sunshine

Zhao Mosheng returns to China after seven years in the United States, having fled her hometown following a painful romantic rejection. Upon her arrival, she unexpectedly encounters He Yichen and his companion, He Yimei, in a supermarket. Mosheng initially believes Yimei is Yichen’s sister, but learns they are not related by blood; rather, Yimei had confessed her love for Yichen, prompting Mosheng to leave the country to escape the heartbreak. Yichen, now a successful and cold-hearted lawyer, treats Mosheng with indifference, stating she is no longer part of his life. Mosheng secures a job as a photojournalist and begins a quiet, solitary existence, trying to put the past behind her.

The narrative shifts when a supermarket security guard returns a lost wallet to Mosheng, which contains a photograph of her with the handwritten note "my sunshine" on the back. Mosheng realizes the wallet belongs to Yichen. She attempts to return it to his law firm but misses him. Shortly after, Yichen arrives at her workplace, revealing he is Yimei’s lawyer and demanding the return of the photograph. Mosheng learns from her former college roommate, now a celebrity named Xiao Xiao, that Yichen suffered greatly after her departure, waiting for her daily and falling into depression. This revelation contradicts Mosheng’s memory that Yichen had cruelly rejected her, causing her to question the truth of their separation.

As Mosheng adjusts to her new life, she is dragged by her colleague Xiaohong on a series of blind dates. During one such outing, she runs into Yichen with another woman, which visibly distresses Xiaohong and reveals past romantic entanglements among their circle. Later, a drunk Yichen ambushes Mosheng in her apartment hallway, kissing her passionately before confessing that he has "lost" to her again after all these years. He then soberly denies being drunk, claiming he is merely "crazy," and leaves her confused and shaken. The following days see Yichen pursuing Mosheng more aggressively, taking her on a walk through their old university campus and revisiting significant locations from their past. He asks her to return to him, proposing a relationship based on suitability rather than romantic passion, citing his lack of interest in getting to know new people.

Mosheng rejects his proposal, revealing that she married someone else in the United States three years prior. This news enrages Yichen, who accuses her of having walked all over him. The story then explores Mosheng’s internal conflict as she visits her hometown and her father’s grave. She reflects on the fact that her father, a corrupt mayor, had orchestrated her departure to America, bribing Yichen with promises of a better future for Mosheng if he agreed to let her go. Yichen had refused the bribe, leading to a bitter misunderstanding where he believed Mosheng had abandoned him for a wealthy American life, while Mosheng believed Yichen had rejected her out of disgust. Mosheng realizes that both of them were manipulated by circumstances and family secrets, leaving them with deep scars and mistrust. The story concludes with Mosheng returning to her work life, still entangled in the emotional aftermath of her reunion with Yichen, unsure if their past can ever be repaired or if they are destined to remain strangers bound by a painful history.
