Zhuang Hui is a modern woman who transmigrated eight years ago into the body of a sixteen-year-old girl in the fictional Daliang Dynasty. She lives a comfortable life as the daughter of Zhuang Mingxiang, a remarried merchant woman who married into the prestigious Changping Marquisate. Zhuang Hui is the stepsister of Zhao Jingzhi and the step-sister of Zhao Changting, the marquis's eldest son from his first wife. The core conflict arises from the tension between Zhuang Hui's desperate need to avoid Zhao Changting and the inevitable intersections of their lives within the marquisate. Zhao Changting, though outwardly cold and disciplined, is not the villain Zhuang Hui fears. He harbors deep resentment toward his father for remarrying so soon after his mother's death and for the harsh treatment he received during their final argument. However, he holds no ill will toward his stepmother, Zhuang Mingxiang, or his stepsister, Zhao Jingzhi. Upon his return, he distributes imperial gifts to the women of the household, including Zhuang Hui and Zhuang Mingxiang, displaying a sense of duty and propriety that surprises Zhuang Hui.

Zhuang Hui attempts to navigate this new reality by feigning illness to avoid interactions with Zhao Changting. She secretly hopes to arrange a marriage with a suitable suitor who is unremarkable and safe, allowing her to live a quiet life away from the novel's romantic entanglements. Meanwhile, Zhao Changting observes her from afar, noting her delicate nature and lack of the boldness he associates with the Wang Li he heard rumors about in the capital. He remains largely indifferent to her, focused instead on his military duties and ensuring his sister receives proper etiquette training.

As the story progresses, the misunderstanding between the two deepens. Zhuang Hui views Zhao Changting as a looming threat, while Zhao Changting sees her merely as a fragile step-sister to be protected from the harshness of the world. The narrative sets the stage for a slow-burn romance where Zhuang Hui must actively change her fate, not by fleeing, but by redefining her relationship with the man she fears. Her proactive approach to marriage and her genuine kindness toward her family begin to chip away at the rigid roles assigned to them by the original novel, creating a divergence from the predetermined tragic ending.
