Okay so let me just say this plot setup is genuinely clever and I need to talk about it because the author is playing 4D chess here and I am HERE for it. On the surface, this is a blind date story. You know the drill: two people meet, awkward small talk, maybe a movie, maybe a walk, and then either sparks fly or they politely part ways. But the author immediately subverts every expectation. Pei Cheng'an doesn't do the slow burn. He doesn't say let's get to know each other first. No, he looks her dead in the eyes and says I'd like us to try dating. Like it's already decided. Like he's ordering takeout, not proposing a romantic relationship. And Xia Zhen's reaction? She's internally screaming because her entire strategy was built on the assumption that she'd have weeks to slowly become unbearable. She rehearsed the whole arc: he'd get frustrated, she'd act devastated, and boom, she's the wronged party with a clean conscience. But he just... skips ahead. He makes it official on the first meeting. Her plan is completely derailed before it even starts. Then the movie gets cancelled because his mentor has a stroke. Which honestly feels like the universe itself is saying no, not today. The author keeps putting obstacles in the way of them actually spending time together, which is frustrating in the best way possible. There's something really beautiful about the scarf moment at the beginning. Xue Chen shoves his scarf at Xia Zhen while looking sulky, and she immediately puts it back on him saying she doesn't need it because 'my elegant neck shouldn't be hidden.' On the surface it's just sibling banter, but look closer. Xue Chen giving away his scarf is an act of care he can't verbalize. He's cold, he's upset, but he still notices SHE's cold and gives her something warm. And Xia Zhen refusing it—not because she doesn't want it, but because she won't let him sacrifice for her. It's this tiny dance of giving and refusing that mirrors their entire relationship. Then there's the music itself as symbol. Xia Zhen choosing those terrible pop songs—'Poisonous Perfume,' 'I'll Love Even in Death'—is almost like she's trying to drown out her own feelings with noise. The lyrics are all about obsessive, desperate love, and she's singing them while trying to push Pei Cheng'an away. The irony is almost painful. She's performing devotion to someone she doesn't love while the person who actually loves her watches from the sidelines. The KTV room itself is symbolic too—it's a space of performance, of hiding behind songs and laughter. Everyone is performing: Xia Zhen performing disinterest, Xue Chen performing indifference, Pei Cheng'an performing calm acceptance. The walls of a KTV room can't contain all these unspoken truths.

After the spar ends with the old man appearing and the kids getting scolded, there's a natural pause — the parents arrive, they stay for a meal. This isn't filler; it's a breath. The chapter needs a moment of calm before the river walk, where the real emotional stuff happens. Without that meal scene, the shift from physical comedy to vulnerable conversation would feel jarring. What I found most effective is how the pacing mirrors Xia Zhen's emotional state. The spar is fast — quick cuts, rapid dialogue, her getting more frustrated with each failed move. Then the fall slows everything down: 'Time seemed to freeze.' Then the river walk is leisurely, almost meandering, which gives space for the heavier conversation about her fears and his responses. The dialogue in this chapter is genuinely funny, and more importantly, it sounds like two different people talking. Xia Zhen's voice is sharp, self-deprecating, and constantly testing — she fires questions like she's probing for traps. Pei Cheng'an's voice is calm, literal, and devastatingly sincere. The contrast is what makes their conversations work. Take this exchange: "What kind of women do you dislike most?" "Women who aren't kind, who curse constantly, or who have twisted values." Xia Zhen's internal reaction: "That answer gave Xia Zhen a headache." And then the narration lists why each of those is impossible for her to be. But the dialogue itself is doing something brilliant — it's establishing that Pei Cheng'an's standards are actually about character, not appearance or domesticity. Which makes his earlier "I wouldn't mind" about her gaining weight hit even harder. He's not lowering his standards; his standards were never about that stuff. The humor comes from the gap between what Xia Zhen expects and what she gets. She's bracing for judgment and gets acceptance. She's looking for a reason to leave and finds none. The dialogue keeps subverting her assumptions, and that's where the comedy lives. My favorite line has to be Pei Cheng'an's deadpan: "Mm, they are indeed better than you." That's the author winking at us, and it makes the whole thing feel more conversational, less precious.

I need to talk about Xue Chen because my heart is literally aching for this boy. The author gives us this devastating line: 'Through it all, Xue Chen didn't look at Xia Zhen. Not even once.' Just that. One sentence. But it says everything. Years of hiding his feelings, of mocking her, of never letting her see the truth—and now she's standing right there with a boyfriend (even if it's pretend) and he can't even look at her. And then there's the scene outside the KTV where he's 'cooling off in the night air' and Da Qu has to tell him 'Xia Zhen's gone mad' before he bolts back inside. What I love is that even in his pain, his first instinct is to check on HER. He thinks she's alone with this guy and rushes back. That's not jealousy—that's genuine care, and it breaks me. The moment he asks 'Are you really Xia Zhen's boyfriend? Or are you a fake?'—his voice must have been shaking. He's not being aggressive, he's being desperate. And when Pei Cheng'an says 'I'm real' and Xia Zhen has to play along, I wanted to shake her. She's so busy executing her plan that she doesn't see the person right in front of her who has loved her for years. But here's what kills me—the car ride home. Pei Cheng'an fastens her seatbelt and says 'a boyfriend should do something for his girlfriend.' Xia Zhen's internal monologue: 'What kind of reaction was that? Was he bothered by her closeness with another man, or not at all?' She's so focused on Pei Cheng'an's reactions that she's completely blind to the fact that the boy who's been pining for her is sitting in that same KTV room, watching her perform for someone else. The dialogue in this section is absolutely delightful and I have to appreciate how each character has such a distinct voice. Xia Zhen's scam call routine is pure gold: 'Hello, this is Zhenzhen Financial Company. Our company has just launched a guaranteed-profit investment project...' I literally laughed out loud. This is such a specific character detail—it tells us she's quick-witted, a bit mischievous, and has zero patience for nonsense. And then the instant switch when she realizes it's Pei Cheng'an: 'Ah, Mr. Pei! I didn't check the caller ID before answering and thought it was another friend.' The obsequious tone shift is so natural and so funny. Xue Chen's dialogue is all subtext. He never says what he means. 'I'm going out for a while' when he's actually devastated. 'Why are you being so rash? Do you even know him?'—which translates to 'I've loved you for years and this hurts.' The author trusts the reader to understand what's underneath. Pei Cheng'an's lines are deceptively simple. 'I was calling to ask if you've eaten.' That's it. That's the whole line. But it's so tender and so revealing of his character—he's been at the hospital all day, hasn't eaten, and his first thought is whether SHE'S eaten. He's not grandiose or dramatic. He's just... present. Caring in the quietest way. The group dynamic dialogue is also spot-on. Da Qu being the peacemaker, the friends escaping to the restroom because Xia Zhen's singing is too much—these small exchanges make the world feel alive. And Xue Chen's line 'I don't believe it' directed at Xia Zhen? Chilling. The author uses dialogue like a scalpel here.
