Qing Yanrou is a young Taoist priest residing in the dilapidated Yantai Guan temple in remote Yantai Village with her elderly grandfather, Daoist Priest Jian Yi. Despite her delicate appearance, she possesses formidable mystical abilities, capable of physically striking ghosts and utilizing talismans to cleanse evil. Her life is quiet until she encounters the ghost of Ning Jinghuai, a young man from a wealthy family in Jing City who was murdered and dumped in the wilderness. Unable to leave his burial site, Ning Jinghuai seeks Qing Yanrou’s help to report his death to the police and see his family one last time. Qing Yanrou agrees, not only out of a sense of justice but also because the Ning family’s wealth could fund the temple’s restoration. She successfully guides the police to the body and negotiates a deal where she escorts Ning Jinghuai’s soul to Jing City in exchange for payment.
At the temple, Qing Yanrou demonstrates her unique craft by creating lifelike paper figures to house the souls of the dead and spirits, such as a cat demon named Xiao Yan. She crafts a paper body for Ning Jinghuai, allowing him to interact with the physical world. When Chu Tingbai, Ning Jinghuai’s cousin and a staunch materialist, arrives to identify the body, he is forced to confront the supernatural when he sees the paper figure moving and speaking. Although initially shaken, Chu Tingbai accepts the reality of the situation as Ning Jinghuai reveals he does not know who killed him. Qing Yanrou uses blood magic on Ning Jinghuai’s personal effects to track the culprit’s location, leading her spirit to an upscale residential complex in the capital. There, she discovers a mysterious Divine Statue and identifies the suspect’s residence on the thirteenth floor.
The investigation reveals that the murder is connected to internal family strife within the powerful Ning clan. Ning Jinghuai’s aunt, Ning Yaqing, and her husband, Jiang Yi, conspired to kill him out of greed and resentment over inheritance and unrequited love. They hired a low-level occult practitioner to perform the murder using dark talismans. Upon confronting the accomplice at his home, Qing Yanrou destroys the sinister statue, which inadvertently kills the man by annihilating his soul with a red light. The police Special Department, led by Tang Lin and Lin Yaoyao, arrives to investigate the bizarre death. They dismiss Qing Yanrou as an amateur fraud, with Tang Lin openly mocking her lack of spiritual aura and advising her to return to her studies. Despite their condescension, Qing Yanrou leaves the scene unbothered, having resolved the immediate crisis. The story concludes with the Ning family dealing with the fallout of the murder plot, while Qing Yanrou prepares to continue her studies in the capital, now entangled in a world of mystical conflicts far beyond her remote village.
