In 1976, Jiang Tang transmigrates into the body of a cannon fodder character from a novel titled Sweet Pet Marriage in the Seventies. The original Jiang Tang was a pampered daughter of a wealthy Shanghai capitalist family who, after her parents were sent down for re-education, married Fu Sinian, a military regiment commander, to maintain her comfortable life. Five years into the marriage, Fu Sinian had been away on duty, and the original Jiang Tang, despising his rough demeanor, fell for a manipulative college student named Lin Pingchuan. Driven by his schemes, she attempted to elope, only to be drugged and sold by human traffickers at a train station. Upon waking in the cargo car, Jiang Tang realizes her impending doom and fights back, stealing the traffickers' money and escaping into the crowd. Drugged and weak, she collapses into the arms of Fu Sinian, who happens to be on a secret mission on the same train. He provides her with an antidote and protects her from the pursuers, though Jiang Tang, unaware of his identity, claims she is happily married and flees.
Jiang Tang rushes home to find her twin children, Fu Chaoyang and Fu Chuyue, starving and abused by her uncle Jiang Dehai and his family, who have been living in her ancestral home and exploiting her monthly allowances. The original Jiang Tang had neglected the twins, leading to their tragic deaths in the novel's timeline. Jiang Tang confronts her abusive relatives, slaps Jiang Qinghuan for threatening the children, and asserts her authority over the household. She discovers a mystical jade bracelet that grants her access to a spiritual space containing fertile land, a healing spring, and the family's hidden treasures. Using this advantage, she empties the ancestral home of all valuable assets, preventing her relatives from stealing them, and decides to take her children to find their father at the military district in the southwest.
Meanwhile, Fu Sinian interrogates the traffickers and learns that Jiang Dehai and Lin Pingchuan were involved in the kidnapping plot. He rushes to the Jiang household, only to find it empty and the relatives arrested for human trafficking and illegal immigration attempts. Believing Jiang Tang has run off with another man, Fu Sinian is consumed by jealousy and worry. Jiang Tang, traveling incognito with her children disguised in soot to avoid traffickers, encounters various challenges on the train. Her son Chaochao displays remarkable intelligence by identifying a potential trafficker, while her daughter Yueyue charms others with her English singing. They also meet Song Yuanyang, a scholar who becomes an ally.
As the journey progresses, Yueyue falls ill, and Jiang Tang uses the spiritual spring water to heal her. The twins begin to trust their mother, who cooks them nutritious meals and provides the care they were denied. Jiang Tang's determination to change their fate drives her to seek out Fu Sinian, hoping to reunite the family and escape the political turmoil of the era. The story follows her efforts to protect her children, reclaim her life, and navigate her complicated relationship with the husband she has not properly met since their wedding night five years prior.
Fu Sinian, having cleared his name and dealt with the criminals, tracks down the train Jiang Tang is on. He recognizes his children and realizes Jiang Tang is not the woman who abandoned him but a mother fighting for her family. The reunion is tense, as Fu Sinian struggles with his pride and Jiang Tang is wary of his cold demeanor. However, the shared bond with the twins begins to bridge the gap between them. Jiang Tang's modern knowledge and the resources from her spiritual space allow her to thrive in the military community, while Fu Sinian gradually softens, recognizing her strength and devotion. The narrative shifts from survival and escape to rebuilding a family unit, as Jiang Tang and Fu Sinian learn to trust each other and raise their prodigious twins together amidst the backdrop of 1970s China.
