Gu Jinshu, a master of traditional Chinese medicine from a previous life, is reborn in 1985 into the body of a twenty-year-old girl with the same name. The original Gu Jinshu was the biological daughter of the wealthy Gu family, but was switched at birth and raised by poor pig butchers in the mountains. After being discovered, she was brought back to Beijing, only to be treated as an outsider in her own home. Her biological parents favored their adopted daughter, Gu Chuxue, while her adoptive family had always abused her. The original Gu Jinshu died after being drugged and tricked into a compromising situation by Gu Chuxue and her fiancé, Lin Qinghai, who were plotting to frame her for infidelity to clear the way for their own marriage.
Upon waking in a guesthouse room with Lu Shiyan, a decorated military commander who was also drugged, Gu Jinshu realizes she has been given a second chance. She escapes through the window just as Gu Chuxue and Lin Qinghai arrive to catch her in the act. When Lu Shiyan reveals himself, Gu Chuxue and Lin Qinghai are stunned to find the man is the formidable Commander Lu. Gu Jinshu returns to the Gu family home and publicly breaks off her engagement to Lin Qinghai. She exposes Gu Chuxue’s affair with Lin Qinghai by revealing hickeys on her neck and correctly diagnoses that Gu Chuxue is pregnant but will miscarry due to her weakened health and previous abortions. She then cuts all ties with her biological family, leaving them shocked and unable to stop her.
Gu Jinshu returns to university, where she faces bullying from Lin Jinxiu, Gu Chuxue’s friend. Using her combat skills and knowledge of acupuncture points, she defeats Lin Jinxiu and her gang. When the corrupt Dean of Students attempts to expel her to protect Lin Jinxiu, Professor Zhang Pingtian, a renowned figure in traditional Chinese medicine, intervenes. Impressed by Gu Jinshu’s medical knowledge and diagnostic skills, Professor Zhang takes her on as his personal disciple and invites her to live at his home, granting her protection and status. This move angers the Gu family and Lin Jinxiu’s father, a bureau director, who is already in conflict with Commander Lu Shiyan over a drug case.
Gu Jinshu’s life stabilizes under Professor Zhang’s mentorship, but her path crosses again with Lu Shiyan. He reveals that he remembers their encounter and demands she take responsibility, proposing a relationship that could lead to marriage. Gu Jinshu, initially resistant and focused on her career, finds herself drawn into a complex dynamic with the commander. Meanwhile, Gu Chuxue, having lost her baby, schemes to regain Lin Qinghai’s affection and undermine Gu Jinshu’s new standing. The Gu parents, realizing Gu Jinshu has secured a powerful mentor, attempt to re-establish contact, but Professor Zhang shuts them down, threatening to expose Gu Chuxue’s medical history if they continue to harass his student. The story follows Gu Jinshu as she navigates her new academic life, builds her medical career, and deals with the lingering threats from her past family and rivals, all while her relationship with Lu Shiyan evolves from a forced obligation to a potential partnership.
