Qiao Yue is a nineteen-year-old man living in Qingshan Village with his father Xia He and four-year-old brother Qiao Xiaoyuan. The family is part of a larger extended household under the authority of Qiao Laohan, the grandfather. Qiao Yue is known throughout the village as a lazy man who refuses to work in the fields, preferring to sleep late and avoid labor. His family supports his cousin Qiao Xingsheng, the eldest grandson, who recently passed the scholar exam, hoping that this academic success will elevate the family's status and provide future security for all members. Qiao Yue’s aunt, Zhou Shi, frequently criticizes him for his idleness and demands that he contribute to the family finances, but Qiao Yue evades these responsibilities with wit and deflection. This magical beehive becomes a pivotal turning point in Qiao Yue’s life. It eliminates the need for him to tend the bees constantly, allowing the colony to thrive without his daily intervention. With his agricultural duties simplified, Qiao Yue begins to engage more actively in the world around him. He sells termite mushrooms in the county market, demonstrating a surprising aptitude for business and negotiation. His interactions with Fang Chuyue also evolve; despite their initial hostility and misunderstandings, Qiao Yue helps Fang Chuyue with his food stall and later gifts him honey, signaling a shift from rivalry to a complex, grudging respect. Meanwhile, Qiao Yue’s sudden change in behavior—waking early and returning late—draws suspicion and curiosity from his family, particularly his aunt Zhou Shi, who continues to scheme for control over family resources.

As Qiao Yue navigates his new life, he faces the ongoing tension between his desire for a comfortable, low-effort existence and the opportunities presented by his system. The system requires financial investment, as each draw costs ten copper coins, prompting Qiao Yue to seek ways to generate income. He leverages his honey production and mushroom sales to accumulate wealth, which he uses to fund further draws and improve his living conditions. The narrative also explores the social dynamics of Qingshan Village, where marriage prospects and family reputation are paramount. Qiao Yue’s cousin Qiao Xingsheng is expected to marry well, while Qiao Yue himself is dismissed as a hopeless case due to his laziness. However, Qiao Yue’s secret advantages begin to set him apart, though he keeps his system hidden from everyone.
