Jiang Niannian, a former pet shop owner and detective with the unique ability to understand animals, is driven out by her abusive adoptive family in July 1982. Guided by a talking village dog named Big Yellow, she travels to Jiangjia Village to find her biological parents, having been switched at birth with a girl named Jiang Xiaolin. Upon arrival, she is greeted by her two older brothers, Jiang Dafu and Jiang Dagui. While Dafu is warm and welcoming, Dagui is initially suspicious and hostile, fearing that their mother, Wang Yingxiu, cannot handle the shock of learning their beloved daughter was not their biological child. Jiang Niannian calmly asserts her identity and demands to meet her parents, displaying physical strength that surprises her new brothers.

Inside, Wang Yingxiu is found weeping over the loss of Jiang Xiaolin. However, upon hearing Jiang Niannian’s name and discussing a specific type of wine, the mother realizes her daughter has also transmigrated from another life. The grief instantly turns to joy, and Wang Yingxiu embraces Jiang Niannian, rejecting the fake daughter who had stolen her place. The family quickly updates the household registry to replace Xiaolin’s name with Niannian’s. Wang Yingxiu, who had previously fought to split from their toxic extended family, firmly establishes that Niannian is now the legitimate daughter and orders her to take Xiaolin’s room.

Niannian’s integration into the family is tested by the return of her grandparents, third uncle, and third aunt, who arrive expecting to exploit the family’s resources. The third aunt attempts to rummage through Niannian’s belongings, prompting Niannian to physically eject her. Tensions escalate when the youngest brother, Jiang Xiaolu, refuses to accept Niannian and runs off to his third uncle’s house. Meanwhile, Niannian uses her animal communication skills to prevent a sabotage attempt on her eldest brother’s fish pond, discovering that local rivals plan to poison the stock. She also uncovers a scandal involving her second brother’s girlfriend, Zhang Fang, who is secretly involved with a cousin, Jiang Jiaxing.

A confrontation in the woods leads to a brawl between Jiang Dagui and Jiang Jiaxing. Niannian intervenes, striking Jiaxing with a brick to protect her brother. The incident draws the attention of the village chief and local police. At the clinic, the drama intensifies when Niannian reveals, through information gathered from a stray dog, that her third uncle is having an affair with a local widow. The revelation causes the third aunt and the widow to engage in a violent physical altercation, exposing the third uncle’s infidelity and distracting everyone from the original fight. Niannian’s sharp tongue and physical prowess earn her the respect of her family and the curiosity of Xiao Jingyan, a retired soldier and former fiancé of Jiang Xiaolin, who has been secretly tracking a dangerous faction.

As the family settles into their new dynamic, Niannian plans to open a pet shop and assist in police work, leveraging her abilities to help her family achieve financial stability. Wang Yingxiu begins a business venture involving fish farming and cooking, while Niannian navigates the complex web of village politics and family drama. The story establishes Niannian as a powerful figure who refuses to be a victim, using her modern knowledge and supernatural gift to protect her new family from external threats and internal betrayal.
