Legend of the Demon Slayer

Chang Weiqi, a fourteen-year-old orphan from the Tonggu Chang family, arrives in Weidao City during a severe snowstorm. His family, renowned Demon-Slayers affiliated with the Weidao Alliance, was destroyed months earlier by Gui Siye, a powerful bear demon known as the Mountain-Shaking Bear. Gui Siye sought a relic called the Chan Water Pearl, which the Chang family guarded. Chang Weiqi’s father, Chang Ci, fought the demon to the death, infusing the boy with the pearl’s spiritual energy before fleeing with him. Weiqi survives the journey to Weidao City, starving and exhausted, and collapses outside Qian Manor, one of the seven great families in the city.

Qian Lingyan, a ten-year-old boy from the Qian family, discovers the stranger and insists on bringing him inside despite his steward’s hesitation. Lingyan is a second son born to a concubine, often overlooked by his father’s main household and looked down upon by his cousin Qian Lingxue because he cannot cultivate the family’s Ice-Snow Qi technique. Moved by Weiqi’s plight and recognizing a kindred spirit, Lingyan offers him shelter and employment as a study attendant. Weiqi accepts, finding in Lingyan a rare friend who treats him with genuine respect rather than pity or suspicion.

The two boys quickly form a bond. Weiqi shares the general outline of his family’s destruction, omitting details about the Chan Water Pearl and the Soul-Grasping Sword Technique to protect himself. Lingyan, eager to prove his capability, takes Weiqi to visit his martial arts instructor, Qu Liushang. There, Lingyan spars with the instructor’s daughter, Qu Yue, and receives advice to learn fist techniques since his Qi cultivation is stagnant. On the way back, they encounter traces of a Withered Ghost that has been attacking travelers. Ignoring the danger, Lingyan and Weiqi track the demon into the woods. Lingyan uses a sonic shout to disorient the creature, but it impales his shoulder. Weiqi, wielding a severed demon arm as a makeshift sword, fights with desperate ferocity, forcing the Withered Ghost to retreat after losing its own arm.

Lingyan’s injuries draw the attention of the Qian family head, his uncle Qian Daozong, and his cousin Lingxue. When Lingyan requests a Weidao Order to hunt the remaining demon, Daozong refuses, citing the high cost and the minor nature of the threat. Lingxue mocks Lingyan, suggesting his desire for vengeance is merely personal pride. Hurt by his family’s indifference and his own perceived incompetence, Lingyan confides in his mother, Yang Yi. She reveals that the Qian family’s reputation burdens them, making them reluctant to expend resources on seemingly small matters. She gives Lingyan a mysterious manual called Beast-Form Fist, a technique from her hometown that emphasizes physical movement and Qi refinement rather than elemental power.

While Lingyan recovers, Weiqi discovers the Ice-Snow Technique left behind in the courtyard. Driven by his need for power and vengeance, he secretly studies it. Thanks to the Chan Water Pearl within his body, he masters the first three levels with remarkable speed. Meanwhile, Lingyan struggles with the disjointed moves of Beast-Form Fist until he dreams of the techniques flowing together naturally, realizing the moves can be combined freely like a language. His father, Qian Daoxuan, returns from bounty hunting and examines the manual but finds it inexplicable, promising to seek outside help.

The narrative expands as Lingyan’s friend Xu Sa, a reckless youth from another great family, interrupts their training. Xu Sa drags Lingyan to Wangfeng Pavilion, a brothel, to hear a singer named Hua Rou. They witness Hua Rou being harassed by a wealthy young master, Chen. Xu Sa impulsively intervenes, only to be outmatched by Chen’s bodyguard. Lingyan and Xu Sa flee, but the encounter reveals Hua Rou’s mysterious nature and her search for the Xuan Yin Sword to cure an illness. The incident leaves Lingyan and Xu Sa reflecting on their powerlessness and their desire to grow stronger. Back at the manor, Lingyan begins to organize a training group with Weiqi, Qu Yue, and others, seeking to improve their combat skills outside the rigid structures of the great families. The story establishes a world where demonic threats persist despite the presence of powerful clans, and where personal bonds and hidden techniques may offer paths to strength that traditional cultivation cannot.
