Liu Xiyin, a scientific genius from a future era, dies suddenly and transmigrates into a novel set in an alternate Republican Era. She awakens as the real daughter of the Liu family, a child lost to the countryside and raised by poor farmers. The Marshal of the five southeastern provinces, Yan, had arranged a marriage for his eldest son, Yan Changye, with the Liu family years ago. When the Marshal discovers the Liu family raised a fake daughter, he threatens execution unless the real daughter fulfills the contract. Liu Xiyin is forced to marry Yan Changye, a man she recognizes as the novel's great villain who will eventually have an affair with his father's Ninth Concubine. Her plan is simple: survive, avoid entanglement, and secure a divorce to escape her fate as cannon fodder.

On her wedding day, Yan Changye is absent. Liu Xiyin is immediately accused by Song Shiyun, the niece of the favored Second Concubine, of pushing the Third Young Master down the stairs. Yan Changye returns unexpectedly and discovers he can hear Liu Xiyin's inner thoughts. Her mind is a constant stream of commentary, revealing her knowledge of future events and her true nature. When pressed for evidence, Liu Xiyin produces a miniature voice recorder, a device far ahead of its time. The recording exposes Song Shiyun's lie and reveals an illicit affair between her and the Third Young Master. Yan Changye punishes Song Shiyun and takes Liu Xiyin to his residence, suspicious of her origins and abilities.

At the Yan Residence, Yan Changye interrogates Liu Xiyin, suspecting she is a spy due to the advanced technology she possesses. He finds photographic film on her person, which he develops to reveal she was being followed. Despite his suspicions, he allows her to stay, intrigued by her secrets. The next morning, Liu Xiyin recalls a plot point from the novel where Yan Changye survives an assassination attempt involving bombs. She attempts to warn him indirectly by feigning clumsiness, but Yan Changye, having already discovered the explosives through his own intelligence network, stages a scene to protect her cover. The bombs detonate, but no one is harmed.

Liu Xiyin accompanies Yan Changye to the Marshal's Mansion for a traditional tea ceremony. The family dynamics are tense, with the Second Concubine and her son, Yan Changzhuo, holding significant influence. Yan Changzhuo attempts to provoke Liu Xiyin with gifts, but Yan Changye intervenes. During the ceremony, Liu Xiyin thinks about the Marshal's eventual downfall and the green hat his wife will wear. To her shock, Marshal Yan reacts to her thoughts, reprimanding Yan Changzhuo for disrespect. This reveals that the Marshal can also hear her thoughts, or at least react to them. Liu Xiyin realizes the danger of her unfiltered mind in a household where secrets are lethal. She resolves to be more careful, but Yan Changye remains fascinated by her, suspecting she is a time traveler or a spy with valuable knowledge. The story follows their complex relationship as they navigate family politics, assassination plots, and the mystery of their shared mental connection.
