In July 1985, Han Yue, a modern female helicopter pilot, transmigrates into the body of a tragic character in a novel titled Breaking Through the Eighties: My Rise in Beijing Society. She inhabits the role of Wang Shihao’s country wife, a woman who was exploited, abused, and ultimately died after being kicked by her cheating husband. Upon waking, Han Yue finds herself in the midst of a chaotic confrontation where her husband has brought his mistress, Huang Ya, and their illegitimate son into their home. The mother-in-law, Old Madam Zhang, demands Han Yue’s immediate divorce, but instead of submitting, Han Yue asserts her rights, refuses to leave, and physically defends herself and her three young sons against the family’s aggression. Her decisive action shocks the household and earns the respect of the alley neighbors.
Han Yue discovers she possesses a spatial ability that is currently frozen, requiring currency to unlock various assets such as forests, warehouses, and villas. Realizing her financial desperation, she searches the house and uncovers a hidden stash of money and documents belonging to the Wang family, which she had previously surrendered entirely to her in-laws. She withdraws the funds and uses a portion to unlock a forest in her space, where she finds a century-old wild ginseng. She sells the ginseng to a reputable traditional medicine clinic for one hundred thousand yuan, a massive sum in the 1980s, and uses the profits to unlock a warehouse and an orchard. With financial independence secured, she takes her children to a restaurant, buys them new clothes, and begins to rebuild her life on her own terms.
The Wang family, furious at the loss of their money, attempts to force a divorce through deceit. Wang Shihao hires two women to kidnap Han Yue to the Civil Affairs Bureau, hoping to process the divorce without her consent. However, Han Yue outsmarts them by having her second son alert the police. She exposes the lack of proper documentation and the bribery attempt, forcing the bureau to reject the application. The police intervene, and Han Yue firmly states she does not consent to the divorce, leaving Wang Shihao with no legal recourse.
Undeterred, Wang Shihao and his mother plot further revenge. They arrange a secret meeting with Huang Ya’s parents at a restaurant to finalize plans for their future together. Han Yue follows them, intercepts the meal, and publicly humiliates Wang Shihao by declaring her support for his illegitimate son while rejecting his attempts to dismiss her. She then runs up a substantial bill at the restaurant before leaving, further draining their resources. The conflict escalates when Wang Lihua, the sister-in-law, attempts to break into Han Yue’s room at night. Han Yue catches the intruder, subdues him with an electric baton from her space, and stages the scene to make it appear as though the man was caught in Old Madam Zhang’s room, turning the family’s malice against itself. Throughout these events, Han Yue remains focused on protecting her three sons, who begin to view her as a strong and capable mother, marking a significant shift from their previous life of fear and neglect.
