Jiang Nanshan is a twenty-seven-year-old associate chief surgeon specializing in maxillofacial surgery at Shanghai University Stomatological Hospital. She is known for her professional competence and calm demeanor, having risen through the ranks rapidly after graduating from medical school. Her personal life is modest; she shares an apartment with her close friend and journalist roommate, Xia Yao. Despite pressure from family members to date, Jiang Nanshan remains focused on her career and maintains a detached attitude toward romantic entanglements. Her past, however, is marked by a significant relationship with He Beizheng, a man from a wealthy and influential family. Eight years prior, during their university days, He Beizheng pursued Jiang Nanshan intensely. Their relationship lasted nearly two years before ending in a bitter breakup on his birthday, after which He Beizheng left the country to study abroad and cut all ties with her.

The story begins with an unexpected reunion when He Beizheng returns to China as the newly appointed CEO of Ansheng Group, a multinational corporation. He accompanies his cousin, Qiao Xingran, to Jiang Nanshan’s hospital after she suffers a jaw fracture from a cycling accident. Jiang Nanshan recognizes He Beizheng immediately, but he treats her with cold indifference, addressing her formally as "Dr. Jiang." This encounter disrupts Jiang Nanshan’s routine, forcing her to confront unresolved emotions from their past. Complicating matters further is the presence of Xu Yang, a lawyer who agrees to go on a date with Jiang Nanshan at her aunt’s suggestion. When Xu Yang becomes overly forward during their meal, He Beizheng intervenes aggressively, humiliating Xu Yang in front of Jiang Nanshan. This incident reveals the depth of He Beizheng’s possessiveness and his inability to remain indifferent to Jiang Nanshan’s interactions with others. Jiang Nanshan, however, remains steadfast in her refusal to engage with him emotionally, insisting that their past is over and that she has no interest in rekindling their relationship.
