Su Momo, a twenty-two-year-old attending physician from the twenty-first century, dies in a motorcycle accident while rushing to perform emergency surgery. Accompanied by her father, Su Momo boards a train to Heilongjiang province. The journey is tense, with reports of child traffickers and thieves, but she is protected by a train attendant who was a former subordinate of her father. She forms an alliance with two fellow passengers, Luo Luo and Wang Junjie, who are key technical workers. They agree to look out for one another, sharing meals and keeping watch at night. Upon arrival, Su Momo is greeted by her brothers and Lin Xingchen. The couple meets for the first time and finds mutual respect and attraction. Lin is immediately smitten by her beauty and intelligence, while Su Momo appreciates his directness, physical strength, and lack of pretense.

They register their marriage the following day and begin setting up their new home, a small courtyard house in a military compound. Su Momo takes charge of managing their household, purchasing furniture, bicycles, and sewing machines. She befriends their neighbor, Sister Xu, and learns to trade for vegetables and eggs in the nearby village. Su Momo also begins to utilize her medical knowledge and language skills, planning to find work and eventually attend university.
