Xia Ren is a calm, observant young man who accompanies his talkative novelist friend Zhong Wan to an offline mystery show called Happy April Fools. The event promises a deadly contest where only the winner deserves to stay alive. Upon arrival at the high-speed rail station VIP lounge, Xia Ren and Zhong Wan are separated and guided into different sections of a modified room featuring a large round table with partitioned booths. Xia Ren finds himself seated at a table with eight other players, including a flamboyant livestreamer known as Brother K, a worried girl in Hanfu, and a trembling socialite. The game begins with a warm-up mini-game that resembles Werewolf, but with lethal stakes. The rules state that while initial eliminations during the game are not real deaths, the losing faction in the final deduction phase will face actual execution.
The first round sees the socialite, Player 8, voted out and subsequently killed by the Hanfu girl, Player 7, who reveals a handgun. It is later disclosed that the two were mother and daughter, and the mother attempted to shoot her daughter before dying. The game continues with nine players remaining. Xia Ren draws a God card but realizes he possesses no skills, a disadvantage he attributes to being a newcomer. He is paired with Dick, a handsome, delusional man who claims to be his romantic partner from a past hospital stay. Dick reveals he is a veteran player in this endless loop of dungeons and uses a special item to communicate with Xia Ren during the night phase. They coordinate strategies, with Dick claiming to be a Hunter to mislead the wolves.
As the Werewolf game progresses, Brother K is killed at night. Before his elimination, he provides detailed advice on gameplay, identifying himself as a good role and suspecting several players. The remaining players engage in heated debates, with two individuals, a priest and a female celebrity, both claiming to be the Seer and accusing each other of being wolves. Xia Ren analyzes the situation carefully, noting that the priest and celebrity are likely both lying or that one is a wolf attempting a hard claim. He identifies Player 9, the socialite's assistant, as a wolf due to his nervous behavior and inconsistent logic. The group votes out Player 9, who remains silent in his final moments.
During the night, the wolves kill Player 4, a writer who is revealed to be another veteran player with a personal grudge against Dick. The journalist, Player 2, reveals that all players are connected through a tragic cult incident in Shenguan Town involving the death of a girl named Nan Jun. The Hanfu girl, Nan Guo, is Nan Jun's sister, and she harbors hatred for Brother K, who abandoned Nan Jun before her death. The priest admits his involvement in the past incident, claiming he tried to seal a devil but failed. The game intensifies as the priest self-destructs, ending the day phase prematurely and allowing the wolves to kill the last villager, Nan Guo, during the night. Xia Ren and Dick are now the only confirmed gods left, facing a critical juncture in the deadly competition.
