The corruption was exposed by a whistleblower who provided photographic evidence of the director’s lavish lifestyle contrasted with the children’s neglect. With the institute’s leadership removed, Officer Lin arranges for Zhu Shuangjiang to be taken to the Municipal Children’s Welfare Institute, where a temporary deputy director, Tan Fangling, oversees operations.

At the welfare institute, Zhu Shuangjiang is assigned to Teacher Li, who supervises healthy children aged four to six. She is placed in a dormitory with five other girls. Despite the rudimentary conditions and the collective nature of care, such as sharing wash water, Zhu Shuangjiang adapts quickly. She demonstrates advanced literacy and social maturity, impressing the staff. She befriends Teacher Ren Ran, who had been transferred from a facility for disabled children after feeling unappreciated. Ren Ran recognizes Zhu Shuangjiang’s potential and kindness, offering her a supportive presence in the new environment. Zhu Shuangjiang accepts her new reality, realizing that while she has lost her previous life and family, she has gained a safe haven and a community that values her well-being.

The narrative establishes Zhu Shuangjiang’s new identity as a child in the early 1990s, a period of rapid economic change in China.
